Written By: Charlotte Farrell Avocado Toast in Orange County

Living in SoCal means you’re probably in love with avocados, which also means you’re probably a fan of the new fad dish that every Instagrammer and foodie alike seems to be going crazy about. If you find yourself constantly craving a good ol’ piece of toast with an enormous amount of avocado smeared on top, you’re not alone. Stop your craving in it tracks with these seven delicious, mouth watering, avocado toast dishes.

SOCIAL Costa Mesa

The ingredients found in the savory spin SOCIAL Costa Mesa has put on the traditional plate are a sight and taste to behold. The sweet yet subtly tart crème fraiche and avo mash is most likely better fit for those who prefer a little bit of a gastronomic adventure. The radishes add some extra crunch alongside confit cherry tomatoes, a luxe addition that really rounds out the flavors. Finished with a sprinkle of pea tendrils and tarragon, it’s a big favorite come brunch time, and is best paired with either a bloody Mary or a mimosa (or two).

Outpost Kitchen

The Australians have it right: organic, grass-fed, no pesticides, no GMOs, and totally Instagram worthy. This Aussie-owned spot is a hidden gem, and the avo toast is its shining star. The variation this month includes smoky harissa and Peppadew pesto, the creamiest house-made ricotta cheese, herb salad, and a tart yet addictive grapefruit reduction. Not to mention a heaping amount of beautifully sliced avocado! As complex as these flavors may seem, once combined, they create an artistically rustic and unified flavor that makes it a standout amongst its counterparts.

Jan’s Health Bar

On a sunny Sunday morning, whether you’re hungover or in the mood for some healthy grub, Jan’s Laguna Beach location is the perfect choice. Even though their smoothies and sandwiches are the main headliners, the avocado toast is a worthy contender. Different from your average big slab of bread, Jan’s offers four slices of a thinner, but extra crunchy honey wheat, all served with a petite fruit cup. The hint of lime and olive oil makes the avo spread delicate and creamy, while a nice pinch of chili flakes gives it a little kick. Add the hardboiled egg, which is generously layered and a definite must-have for optimal enjoyment.

Haute Cakes Caffe

A jewel in the heart of Newport, you can find Haute Cakes nestled in a somewhat secret garden-esque site, the smell of freshly baked cookies lingering in the air. It’s a local favorite with a history of having delicious fare, and the avocado toast is no exception. Now that they serve kombucha on tap, grab a glass and order your avo toast with poached eggs and bacon. The add-ons give the chunky avocado spread a lot of “oomph,” turning the dish into more of an open faced breakfast sandwich that is extra filling. It is best enjoyed outside, soaking in the sunlight while having conversations with a mouth full of yummy goodness!

Burnt Crumbs

Run, don’t walk, to Pacific City. Head over to their upscale food court style artisanal market, Lot 579. Check out Burnt Crumbs, a corner shop that boasts one of the best avo toasts in the OC. A cheery employee said, “It’s one of the most popular items on the menu,” and you’ll soon discover why. The avocado is fresh, bright green, and smashed with a spritz of lime. It’s just enough to give it some bite. Bits of baby cilantro and finely dusted chili-lime powder get balanced out with a few hefty dollops of homemade ricotta cheese.

The Cellar

It’s easy to imagine wine and cheese being the center of attention at The Cellar in San Clemente, but the breakfast, and mainly the avocado toast, is drawing in a new group of devotees. The aptly named version titled “The Works” uses California Haas avocados. The toast is loaded with the green goods and a bevy of toppings to kick things up a notch. A layer of tomatoes, a couple slices of bacon, and a gooey fried egg bring it all full circle. And be sure to ask for extra pepper, if you dare.

Green Bliss

If you find yourself in Fullerton and happen to be a vegan, vegetarian, or simply in the right place at the right time, this sustainable joint is ready to serve a toast that fits their vibe. Thick and vibrant tomato slices rest nicely on top of wedges of avocado and a decent spread of homemade red pepper tapenade. The cherry on top? Everything is organic and served on a big piece of flax or rye bread. And if you find yourself in need of a bit more, their seasonal soups make a great avo toast companion. Spoons at the ready!
