Is the wildly insane, “Catalina Wine Mixer” scene from the Will Ferrell madcap classic comedy, “Step Brothers” anything at all like the real-life Catalina Wine Mixer at Descanso Beach Club? The “Wine Mixer” title is a bit deceiving for this is a weekend-long experience highlighting live music, which is far more than wine. Although there certainly will be wine available everywhere to purchase and wine tasting will occur (complimentary tastings with VIP tickets), it is the concerts that are the real attraction. The proceedings begin on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a screening of “Step Brothers” at the historic Casino Theatre. Two men in their 30s still live with their parents, one with his father, the other with his mother. One of the brothers throws a party and it ends up being referred to, in the film, as “The %$#&*@ Catalina Wine Mixer.” The film is the theme of this year’s event and the theme carries into the costume party at Avalon Grille at 10 p.m. DJ K Fresh will provide the sounds for the evening while guests are encouraged to channel one’s inner energy and come dressed as one of the leading characters of the film. Those in costume will vie in a contest to win a future night’s stay at the Pavilion Hotel with round trip boat transportation and two Zip Line Eco Tour tickets, as well as a meet and greet with several event entertainers. Saturday’s outdoor entertainment begins on the beach at 6:30 p.m. at Descanso Beach Club. The show starts with DJ Ayla. Then the three member Welsh electric band, The Joy Formidable opens the live show. At 8:30 p.m. the featured act, KONGOS take the stage. This is a hard-driving rock band that creates a unique, signature sound combining electric slide guitar and an acoustic accordion.
Sunday is the big day with concerts starting at 2:00 p.m. and lasting until 10 p.m. The show from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. begins with DJ Ayla to warm up the audience. Then the live show begins with Everett Coast, an acoustic guitar driven duo of woven voices and tightly fused songwriting; then the nephew of Carlos Santana and “American Idol” contestant in 2014, Adam Lasher; LA-based hard rockers, Machineheart; and singer/songwriter, Erick Macek. To close the show, The Dan Band featuring Dan Finnerty, returns from last year to headline the weekend. The Dan Band, who was made famous in the films, “The Hangover” and “Old School”, performs hilarious covers, takeoffs and distinct embellishments of various rock classics. Santa Catalina Wine Mixer
Admission tickets for this event are available in full or in part. There are two basic options for tickets: General Admission and VIP.
