This past weekend, Liberty Station was more bustling than usual. ArtWalk San Diego hosted its free 11th annual presentation at Liberty Station’s Ingram Plaza and unsurprisingly, San Diego took notice. The event that went on both Saturday and Sunday displayed exhibits in an array of mediums including jewelry, photography, wood carving, painting, ceramics and sculpture – there was truly something for everyone. Being the sister festival to the fine art Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy, ArtWalk at Liberty Station is equally known for bringing out some of the best in San Diego. Whether it be the avid collectors, art lovers or simply families who happen to stumble upon the festivities, each year is better than the last and this year was no exception.

The event boasted over 200 artists local to San Diego and from around the globe. Aside from the art, attendees were also able to enjoy fun giveaways at tents, sponsored by San Diego Union-Tribune and CW5, and more. A sponsored stage for live music was also set up for guests to take a seat and relax while listening to local musicians. Not to mention, the delicious food and beverage offerings available from vendors like Balance Bars, Stone Brewing Co. and Crepes 4 Lovers. To top it all off, ArtWalk at Liberty Station also featured three unique guest driven activities this year.

For starters, Nan Coffey’s live painting is a progress piece in which she takes information and inspiration from others to put together one collective painting. The work included snippets and bits from her online followers as well as attendees of the ArtWalk. “I paint what I’m inspired to paint, when I’m inspired to paint it, and this can change from minute to minute, ” Coffey said to Skye Art Gallery earlier this year. ArtWalk goers were able to visit Coffey’s station throughout both days to see how far she had come and share part of themselves to be included in this unique work of art. Overall, it was one of the activities that helped bring people together, literally and figuratively, as well as get the opportunity to interact with the art on a personal level.

Another artist, James Yuransky, helped in bringing the art to the masses with his over-sized paint-by-numbers artist-directed project. “Painting live with the help of a steady stream of eager volunteers allows my work to flow more spontaneously, ” Yuransky said about the experience to ArtWalk San Diego. Visitors were able to put brush to canvas and test their skills by bringing to life a pre-drawn mural. The interconnected triangular facets that are classified as Zedism, that Yuransky is best known for, create a three-dimensional illusion with unique shapes and hues making it the perfect piece to share with guests of the ArtWalk. The exhibit was bustling with people old and young who were simply thrilled to make themselves a part of the art.

Last, but certainly not least, making its first appearance to the ArtWalk at Liberty Station was the Butterfly Effect. ArtWalk and Butterfly Effect joined forces this year to set up a fun scavenger hunt in which hand painted (by ArtWalk artists) butterflies were hidden around the plaza for visitors to find. Clues were shared via the events social media outlets and finders of the hidden butterflies were able to select their favorite charity for Butterfly Effect to donate to. The first butterfly found by Baruc and Phillip Avilez resulted in a donation of $250 to ArtReach San Diego. Also, Butterfly Effect also provided a picture-perfect backdrop by the stage where guests could take a photo with their own butterfly wings.

All in all, Liberty Station was a hub of all things creative this weekend by providing opportunities for both old and young to enjoy the fun with a multitude of festivities. We hope to see you there next year!
