Surfs Up! Venice Beach has a new restaurant on the scene. Surfside Bar & Grill’s soft opening had good vibes, hip music and, of course, great beach food. Chef Jesse, who has worked directly with the “GLEE” crew as well as running a restaurant outlet in Paramount Studios in Hollywood, has a hand in making this local bar and grill your new favorite spot in Venice.

Surfside is a new bar and restaurant in the Venice community in a classic 110-year-old-building. The scene can be described as “laid back and casual but [with] a lot of attention to detail,” says creative director Leni Koen. “This is a place for everybody, bringing the international community as well as locals together,” Koen adds.

Many of the locals and neighbors from shops and other restaurants around the Venice Beach area stopped in to enjoy a variety of items off the menu, which includes some vegan and vegetarian options for our non-carnivores. Hospitality Consultant Salar Sheik says, “When we developed this menu as a personal motive, my half was not to totally exclude the vegan and vegetarian population. I’m very passionate. I talked about it, how it’s a big moving trend but it’s also a way of life and lifestyle even for people who are not 100 percent vegan. Our menu reflects that.”

The menu features California comfort food with dishes like Lobster Mac n Cheese that uses Canadian cold-water lobster, three-cheese sauce, and penne with chives and panko breadcrumbs. Korean Fries, LA Street Corn, Cali Salad, K-Town Bulgogi Burger and Surfside Fish Tacos are just a few of the other stars on the menu. Most of the menu items are compliments of the West Coast, inspired by the ocean and sustainably caught. The produce is some the best in LA with locally sourced ingredients.

“It’s a Cali-fresh comfort inspiration; the inspiration is definitely the beach and the people of California [and] Los Angeles to be honest with you. It represents the demographic, the flavor profile and the overall vibe of what LA really is,” said Sheik.

Their drink menu offers a variety of local beers, wines and even some signature cocktails like the Lifeguard, Son of a Beach, Pink Bikini, El Nino, Sun Tan and Tidal Wave Fish Bowl all match the ocean theme. There will be 11 TVs so you can show support to your favorite sports teams! Plus, a dining area with booths and a skylight that provides for natural sunlight. This beach-friendly hot spot also prides itself in using biodegradable straws and packaging. They will also have live music and a DJ in the coming weeks following the grand opening.

Surfside definitely gets an A+ in my book and is a great spot to check out after relaxing on the beach, or if you’re looking to have a refreshing cocktail after work. The next time you’re around or kicking back on Venice beach, be sure to stop into Surfside to grab a bite to eat, a refreshing sip and enjoy some live music while mixing and mingling with some of the area’s natives. Be sure to come and celebrate Surfside at their official Grand Opening on July 13th!
