With so many fabulous options of resorts to enjoy in Greater Palm Springs, one in La Quinta tends to make an impression in particular. Breaking ground on a stunning new development on SilverRock Resort, there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months. LOCALE Magazine was able to interview the General Manager and Director of Golf for the resort, Randy Duncan, and ask him a few questions; not only about SilverRock but about his history in Greater Palm Springs and his relationship with the industry.
In 1992, Randy moved to the desert “to pursue a career playing golf as a professional.” While it did not pan out the way he intended, he ended up working at the Mountain and Dunes Courses at the La Quinta Hotel. Randy shared, “I love being around golf….the smell of fresh cut grass, the beauty of golf courses and its surroundings and the many different aspects that the golf business offers. It was a perfect marriage between my college business background and being a player.”
His passion for the green is what has contributed to much of the success at SilverRock. When asked about the best part of his job, Duncan responded that it’s “coming to work every day and seeing the natural beautiful setting that SilverRock is surrounded by.” Now, after a period of closure for re-seeding during the summer, the course is now open for all to enjoy just as much as Duncan does. He shared that he enjoys “wearing many different hats” and being heavily involved in so many different aspects of the resort, from finance to agronomy. Overseeing more than 70 employees keeps him informed, connected and in tune to what guests need and want.
The resort has major plans in the works to meet the desires of its guests. Breaking ground on an impressive project in 2017, there is a lot to anticipate once complete. We can expect to see a 140-room, five-star quality luxury hotel and spa, a 200-room, four-star quality lifestyle hotel, and a resort village to accompany it—with many residential and retail units available. 160 resort-style homes will be on the property to own or rent short term, and a permanent Golf Clubhouse will be part of SilverRock as well. Aside from the $420 million renovations taking place, and all that it will bring the property, Duncan notes that guests still have a lot to enjoy in the meantime. “Numerous walking and biking paths in and around the resort…and numerous retail shops and restaurants” only add to the excellence of SilverRock Resort.
While there is a lot to look forward to in the next year, SilverRock remains a destination for locals and visitors alike for world-class golf, a stunning event space and excellent dining in their SilverRock Grill. Book yourself some private lessons on their Arnold Palmer Classic Course and prepare for a season to remember.
