Q: How has The Studio O changed the culture and expectations of hair salons in the Long Beach area?
Oscar Vasquez: I think The Studio O has raised the bar on the strength of a stellar consultation. We believe that the foundation of a solid relationship with our guests begins first and foremost with a thorough conversation about hair goals.
Q: Do you think the beach cities have their own signature style that sets them apart from places like WeHo or Beverly Hills?
OV: The one major way I believe beach styles differ would be a more lived in type of style. Beach waves achieved by air drying with sea salt sprays or waving lotions. Less intentional manipulation with hot tools or blow dryers as you see in other areas.
Q: How do you handle clients whose expectations or desires are either not realistic or not their best option?
OV: Our job is to be honest. It’s important for me to tell someone if a certain silhouette will adversely affect their overall look and face shape while not negatively criticizing them. In most cases, guests respect my professional opinions but there are always certain exceptions. In these cases, I remember that all of these guests are my bosses and I try to give them what they are intently asking for. I always reserve the right to walk away from the job as to not have something I am not proud of walking out the door.
Q: What color trends should we expect to see this spring and summer?
OV: Soft beiges will be huge this summer as well as the continuation of the trend of extreme ash tones…Grays, silvers, platinum, etc.
Q: Men’s grooming services have become increasingly popular. What trends for men are gaining popularity at your salon?
OV: Men’s highlighting services (‘guylights’) are always popular in the summer as well as gray blending. We have been seeing a trend lately with men opting for express keratin treatments (Brazilian Blowouts) to smooth certain sections of hair.
Q: Your Yelp ratings are five-star all the way. What is your philosophy of stellar service?
OV: Our team firmly embodies the belief of a great experience while you are visiting The Studio O. It starts with a warm and welcoming experience and extends into the hair color, haircut or whatever service you are in the shop for. We want it to be a professional and friendly atmosphere where you feel beautiful and appreciated. I believe our Yelp ratings mirror that.
