Meet the New Kid on the Beach: Tower 12

Hermosa Beach, just as its name states, is a beautiful small beach city nestled in the South Bay. For those who haven’t had the opportunity to visit Hermosa Beach, the city offers an array of establishments with everything from must-visit boutiques and hot-spot bars to organic coffee shops, and, most importantly, delectable food. Cue the new kid on the beach—Tower 12.

Stepping into Tower 12 is an experience all on its own. Walking up the stairs, guests will see retro photos hanging beside tiki masks that adorn the walls of the restaurant. Black roller skates, old skateboards and beach memorabilia are all put together to give this place a look and feel that only Tower 12 can have.

Greeted by Brian Johnson’s vocals blasting in the background yelling, “I’m on the highway to hell,” I walk into the lively second floor terrace filled with people chattering and cheering.

As the host walks me to what is considerably the best table in the restaurant, the place is jam-packed, yet not crowded. It is easy to see why someone can spend the entire day here as I look at tables filled with drinks, plates of food and people singing to the music.

A beautifully constructed custom surfboard table, made by Spyder Surf’s founder Dennis Jarvis, sits near the bar and is surrounded by people watching the latest sports games on the five flat-screen TV’s near the table.

The relaxed atmosphere has something for everyone, from people in board shorts and flip-flops drinking 24 ounce cups of beer to those in heels and designer jeans drinking handcrafted cocktails.

With a menu guided by one of Los Angeles’ most distinguished names, Consulting Chef Brendan Collins joined Executive Chef Alex Granados and the rest of the Tower 12 team to create a unique, new take on California classics.

While the menu is extensive and offers a fine collection of dishes like Cheese Steak Poppers and Magic Mushroom Pizza the friendly staff is sure to recommend you the perfect plate if you find yourself overwhelmed with the many choices.

And to quench your thirst? Well, with two full-service bars, a variety of brews on tap, wine and a drink menu specializing in handcrafted cocktails created by mixologist John Fox of Palmilla, Tower 12 will never have you waiting too long for a drink.

Must Order: Burrata Toast & Prosciutto Di San Daniele and Wood Fired Garlic Blue Shrimp

The toast is like a scrumptious Italian plate that you don’t have to travel outside the country for. It’s a levain delight that is made in-house and perfectly toasted to a crunch. The whipped Burrata cheese mixed with pesto, basil and heirloom tomatoes halved on top of prosciutto is the perfect starter if you’re looking for something light, yet satisfying.

The Wood Fired Garlic Blue Shrimp should definitely be on your food-bucket list this summer. Served in a skillet, Caledonian shrimp are smothered in garlic butter and await your taste buds. Accompanied with charred sourdough, this appetizer will surely leave you wanting more!

Must Sip: Palmilla Paloma and Mai Mule

With summer just around the corner and the warm air quickly approaching the SoCal shores, simmer off with the incredibly refreshing Palmilla Paloma. Served on the rocks with Casamigos Reposado Tequila, muddled ginger and freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit juices with a salty sweet orange zest rim and garnished with mint, it’s the perfect combination that makes for a revitalizing cocktail.

If tequila isn’t your poison and you prefer the cool, bitter taste of vodka, look no further than the Mai Mule. A special combination of a Mai Tai and Moscow Mule, this drink sets itself apart from the rest for its sweet taste. Mixed with Stoli Vodka, fresh lime juice, ginger beer, orange curacao and Giffard Orgeat syrup, the Mai Mule is also served on the rocks and is ideal for a sunny afternoon on the terrace.

Tower 12’s popularity is definitely noticeable and has quickly grown as the place to be in Hermosa Beach. If you don’t believe me, check out the line outside this place on the weekends, word to the wise, reservations are a good idea.

Without a doubt Tower 12 caters to the beach-loving hungry surfer in all of us. If you don’t mind the breeze, be sure to get a seat by the window on the terrace, after all, the drinks are sure to keep you warm.
