What to Do in Laughlin: More than Casino Action

Written By: Mary McNulty What to Do in Laughlin

In 1964, Don Laughlin opened an eight-room hotel named the Riverside. Four rooms were used as the hotel while the family lived in the others. Fast forward to today, Laughlin now has 10, 000 rooms with nine hotels/casinos, 60 restaurants, a bowling alley and an outlet mall right in the center of town. There are over 14, 000 casino workers employed in the city supporting an estimated two million visitors annually. What to Do in Laughlin

The charm of Laughlin is the ability to balance both adult and family time. For kids, there is the accessibility to the water activities while parents have the Casino for adult time. With 60 restaurants, the dining options range from the buffet to fine.

While gaming is an important element to the city, there is so much more. The river offers tons of fun. There are numerous golf courses in the area and spas in many of the hotels. Stars such as Carrie Underwood are now putting Laughlin on their tour schedule. Underwood will be there in October demonstrating that slowly Laughlin is becoming its own identity combining gaming, water activities and entertainment. With so many activities to choose from, here are a few suggestions for the Laughlin experience.

What to Do in Laughlin

STAY

Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort

The original hotel, the Riverside, is a great choice. Located on the Colorado River, the hotel has full casino action as well as direct access to the water. Inside the hotel there is food everyone will enjoy. Choices run the gambit from Fatburger, to a food court featuring Cinnabon, and a casual 24-hour restaurant. Requiring reservations and a more elegant evening, the Gourmet Room and Prime Rib Room offer beautiful views and are located within the Resort. Entertainment options within the hotel include the bowling alley, car museum and Don’s Celebrity Theater which offers live entertainment. The shows, for the most part, are tribute bands to classic rockers such as the Blues Brothers and Boston.

DO

Hoover Dam

For a side trip, the Hoover Dam is a must. The dam has no street address, so directions are available online. While Visitor Center tickets may be purchased via the internet, tour tickets are first come, first serve and must be purchased in person. There are two tours available lasting either a half hour or an hour.

Laughlin Outlet Center

If there is a desire to stay close to the hotels, the Outlet Center is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Whether you are looking for great deal at Bath and Body Works or a new outfit from Quiksilver, the mall provides an uncrowded setting. The design provides a great selection with an easy to navigate layout. Pick the kids something up at Carter’s and treat yourself to something special at the Bootbarn while visiting.

Desert River Outfitters

For those wishing to get physical, a kayak trip should fit the bill. There are many packages available from renting a kayak to guided tours. The guided trips can last days or hours depending upon the time available and the strength of the Crew. The river is generally calm, and the trip can be relaxing but physically challenging.

Round-Up Colorado River Regatta

The Regatta begins August 6 through August 9. The event is well organized and has sponsors from the Laughlin Casinos to insure great room rates. The website very carefully and concisely lists all information needed to participate. This sounds like a great deal of fun.

About The Author

Mary McNulty

Never went to the same elementary school twice. Admittedly it was pretty cool always being the new kid. Ruled both Stone Mountain High in Stone Mountain, GA and the San Miguel dorm at UC Santa Barbara during my tenure. After my college freshmen year in Atlanta my Dad was transferred to CA. No way was I staying in the Southeast alone. After all we had lived in almost every Southeastern state. Born in Tennessee. Moved to Alabama. Moved to Florida. Moved to Ohio –definitely out of our element. Moved to Atlanta –Stone Mountain-and amazingly went to the same high school until graduation. Moved to CA in ’75 basically in three locations. Without a doubt the best place and time was as a college student at UC Santa Barbara. Shocker huh? Had the rough experience of living in the dorm. I lived in the eight floor “Penthouse” for two years. One year the room overlooked the campus lagoon where at 6 am the Crew Team would yell “Stroke!” The other year simply overlooked the Santa Barbara coast. Spent far too long in a career without passion but no longer. So here is to living the passion regardless of age.
