It’s recycled, it’s good for the environment and most of all, it can be useful and just as equally beautiful. Shipping containers are now one of the most popular architectural adventures. Many have purchased used containers to create amazing works of art and spectacular buildings. From coffee shops to restaurants to affordable housing and charitable housing, there is no end to how these metal behemoths can be reused for something truly awesome. We’ve laid out some shipping container revamps below to let you see their unmeasurable possibilities.

 

  1. Steelcraft

Long Beach is the home to Steelcraft park. Sitting in the historical suburb of Bixby Knolls, Steelcraft has welcomed local businesses to take part in all the fun. With a renowned coffee shop, tasty ramen spot and delicious local beer, there is no shortage of fun at the park. Steelcraft is dedicated to being a sustainable eatery, ensuring that all vendors are honest and ethical about their sourcing and sales. Look out for the upcoming Steelcraft eateries in Garden Grove and Bellflower!

  1. Joshua Tree Residence

Joshua Tree is so much more than an amazing U2 album. It is the home to some of Southern California’s best camping and desert scenery. Connecting with nature in the middle of the desert can be life-changing. This is why it is easy to understand why London designer James Whitaker thought up this beautiful container home in the middle of the desert. Set to be a vacation home, the building uses more than 12 containers shaped like an anemone.

Not everyone can afford a vacation home designed by renowned architects and designers. Some need a little more assistance. Hope on Alvarado is a new development in Westlake set to help those transitioning out of homelessness. The building on Alvarado Street will incorporate shipping containers as the primary building material for the development. Construction is set to begin at the beginning of 2018, and the finish date is projected to be within a rapid six-months.

 

  1. Downtown Container Park

Viva Las shipping container! Vegas has done it again. The Downtown Container Park is a hub for shopping, entertainment and dining. This open-air shopping park offers a wide range of things to do for the entire family. From Instagram-worthy food and drinks from restaurants to dancing the night away with live entertainment, your night is planned. Take the kids to the Treehouse and slide down the 33-foot slide or get creative with the oversized foam blocks and just remember that the smile on your face will be permanent for the rest of your trip.

  1. Potter’s Lane 

Another philanthropic use for shipping containers, Potter’s Lane contains 16 beautiful 480-square-foot living spaces that focus on rehabilitating chronically homeless veterans. The design is sustainable, efficient, cost-effective, sturdy and permanent. The hope here is to address the challenges veterans face when they return home, be it physical or emotional disabilities.
