Orange County May Be Producing Its Next Major Artist

Written By: Omar Velasquez Local Bands in Orange County

Orange County has been known to push, create, and bring out talented musicians since the good days of No Doubt, Thrice, Something Corporate, The Offspring and recently, Young the Giant. The list goes on and on and with more bands coming out of the woodwork and evolving. As the times change, the music changes too. Like most bands, all the major artists started off small and local. From practicing in moms basement, dads garage, or playing in the backyard making noise to annoy the neighbors, they eventually move on to play shows at local parks, local pubs, and making enough money to record, make merch, and go on tour. Today’s modern day music has shifted from record labels to taking the initiative approach of DIY. With the 21st century technology and great streaming services like Bandcamp, Soundcloud and Reverbnation and help from local venues, most bands are recording at home studios and pushing great quality music.

We never know when the next Gwen Stefani or Dexter Holland will emerge. Here are five up and coming artists from Orange County that we are listening to, and you should look out for.

The Jeffcoats

The Jeffcoats are from all over the spectrum of Orange County, but if they had to pick certain city, vocalist, bassist and guitarist, Spencer Hayden, leans towards Laguna Niguel. With both releases in 2016 with inspiration from Weezer, The Beatles, Beach Boys and Big Stars all mixed in together, The Jeffcoats have had a strong start. The self-titled EP released earlier this year has music that will definitely take you back to riding the 101 freeway with the top down. Known for the song “You Got What I Want”, 0 this track will be the love rock song you move to. The Jeffcoats consider themselves as two skinny nerds just making music.

Between California and Summer

Not only does Anaheim have Disneyland, but it has the fun pop punk band, Between California and Summer (BCAS). Along with energetic and upbeat with new songs, these guys are not your average boy band. Formed in the likes of classic bands Death Cab for Cutie, All Time Low and Hello Goodbye, BCAS sing about happy-sad love songs that are catchy and will have the audience dancing along in no time. Known for the song Main Attraction off of Aesthetically Pleasing, released in April of this year, this band is a great time all around–from studio recorded music to their live performances. BCAS even played this year’s Vans Warped Tour 2016!

Andy’s Room

From Fullerton, Andy’s Room keeps the sadness going with their emo-based melodies. Formally known as the band Floorboards and changing their name in early 2016, this light hearted band has some thought-provoking lyrics that will have you reminiscing about your ex-significant other. Bringing in perky and quick riffs and fast drums, Andy’s Room’s sound blends perfectly together. With tracks like “Flower” and “Merlin” it has their listeners feeling wrecked with beautiful emotion.

From the south county city of Aliso Viejo you can hear the ambience sound coming out of each instrumentation and member in Pedestrian. The musical team was formed back in 2002 in the hopes to bring emotion and serenity to its listeners. Not just in ethereal vocals and beautiful lyrics, there is heart in the instrumentation and pattern of each song. Similar to The Dear Hunter meets M83, this is shoegaze ambient post-rock at its finest. Strictly alluring music comes from the band Pedestrian. With tracks like “Dirty Brains” and “Ambi-Turner”, they will have you daydreaming to their whole record discography.
