Guide: Hide Away in Monterey
Written By: Kim Conlan
Once you have made it into the enchanting area that the likes of Clint Eastwood, Salvador Dali, and John Steinbeck have at one time made their home, it’s time to figure out how to make the most of your adventure. Monterey is not meant to be a bustling, fast-paced place. Instead, most people are looking to escape, to walk with a slower stride, and to enjoy a somewhat whimsical type of existence. That being said, locals in this area are very protective of their home and always expect outsiders to feel the same. There are many places to enjoy within the Monterey Peninsula, depending on your preference of activity. Take advantage of this list, and hide away in Monterey. You might find that you’ll just want to stay.
Up until the 1960s, the people of the Monterey Peninsula survived from cultivating the bounties of the sea. Once the market began to wane, the community of industry shifted to one of hospitality. Where hundreds of individuals once went to work, many now come to play and enjoy the rich history of this oceanside community. Although the area has evolved into a much more modern site for tourists, there are still many historical points of interests. Stay beachfront at the Spindrift Inn, which offers unique rooms, and has been around since 1927. Dine at the Chart House for a more modern seafood experience, or The Fish Hopper for panoramic ocean views and sustainable, local cuisine. Monterey has some of the finest local wine, so make sure to partake and pair with your meals as you visit. Shop and enjoy the crisp Pacific Ocean and beaches, or kayak through the Bay in search of local wildlife.

Near to Carmel-By-The-Sea, visitors can discover one of the best golf courses found anywhere in the world. Since most of them are private, or you have to know the right person to get a tee-time, Pebble Beach is the perfect place to get in as a member of the public. Enjoy the ocean adjacent to the course, but make sure not to lose your ball over the cliff! Henry Miller Memorial Library
Big Sur is about 45 minutes from the peninsula, but well worth the drive if you have the time. You can spend time wandering the beaches, camping, or at this place, the Henry Miller Memorial Library. Upon losing his friend, the great author Henry Miller, the original owner of the property, Emil White, decided to dedicate his home in Miller’s remembrance. When White also passed away, the location became a not-for-profit “where nothing happens, ” according to the organization. That means that you should explore the library, enjoy the rich scent of the redwood forests, or grab a coffee and open an old-fashioned book. In the summer, the Library is host to many music, fashion, art, and community events, making it a great time to come and visit.
