Spread the love

The holidays are a time for togetherness. But occasionally, after you and your kin have spent hours watching your favorite Christmas movies, gone through all your favorite board games and drank all the hot cocoa in the house, you need to think of a new way to feel the joy of the season. Luckily, San Diego is known for putting on a wealth of holiday displays that will make even the biggest Grinch in your life’s eyes light up with wonder. Here are five places to get into the seasonal spirit in San Diego.

1. Skating by the Sea at Hotel Del Coronado

Not many people get to ice skate with an ocean view. Come to the luxurious Hotel Del and strap on some rental skates for this unique beachside experience. For the past 13 years, the Hotel Del Coronado has created a winter wonderland featuring thousands of lights, a quaint Victorian-inspired village and hot cocoa available for guests. Hurry up before the snow melts though, the ice rink closes after Jan. 1.

2. The Old Globe

Tis the season to let your hair down and party like a Who! The Old Globe is one of San Diego’s premiere theatres, and every year they put on a whimsical production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. For over 20 years, the show has captivated audiences and helped viewers get into the holiday spirit. Running until Dec. 24, it’s not too late to sing along and join the chorus. For those who are unable to see the play, you can still get swept up in the magical decorations in Globe’s Copley Plaza, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, including a massive tree and enough decorations to light all of Whoville.

3. Rady’s Ice Rink at Liberty Station

Adults can access this cozy ice rink for as little as $14, while children’s tickets are $12. Admission includes access to the rink for the day the ticket was purchased, ice skate rental and an optional helmet rental. Not only is this a fun, festive outing, but you can feel good about getting out and about; proceeds from the rink benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital’s Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. You can glide across the ice from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 8.

San Diego County Credit Union Stadium (formerly Qualcomm Stadium) is hosting its inaugural Global Winter Wonderland. This extensive event includes massive light displays, carnival rides, food vendors, and more. Tickets are $22 for adults and $19 for children and senior citizens; however wristbands can be bought for those looking to attend multiple days, or are interested in enjoying many rides.

5. Jungle Bells

The holidays (and monkeys) are in full swing at the San Diego Zoo until Jan. 1. During the holiday season, the iconic San Diego attraction is transformed into a mecca of twinkling lights, dazzling performances and festive displays.
