Six Companies Put Their Construction to the Test

Six companies are working in a remote area of the San Diego borderlands on prototypes for President Trump’s border wall.
Four of the wall prototypes are made of concrete; the other four of steel and concrete; one has spikes on top. Each prototype is 30 feet tall.
The office of Customs and Border Protection is paying $20 million for the prototypes. Once finished, CBP—which is the parent agency of Border Patrol—will test to understand if the prototypes can be breached, and study how effective added elements are to negate climbing and other security issues.
The companies building the concrete wall prototypes include: Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Tempe, AZ; Caddell Construction Co. of Montgomery, AL; Texas Sterling Construction Co. of Houston, TX; and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. of Philadelphia, MS. The other four companies are: Caddel Construction and W.G. Yates & Sons, KWR Construction of Sierra Vista and ELTA North America of Annapolis Junction, Maryland.
The construction site is just east of San Diego’s Otay Mesa port of entry.
Jamie Fisher, public relations spokesperson at Fisher Sand & Gravel, said, “We believe we provide a high-quality product, and a project like this will give us the opportunity to demonstrate the caliber of work that our team has delivered to our customers for six decades.”
Trump’s border wall is opposed by congressional Democrats and some Republicans, as well as most of California’s and San Diego’s leadership. The administration asked Congress for $1.6 billion for 74 miles of new border wall—most of it in south Texas. This request is currently awaiting verdict as Congress considers larger border security and immigration legislation.
