Antonio Gates, a Trip to Tokyo and Diamonds in the Buff

It was a humid Tuesday in the Hollywood Hills when we arrived at Antonio Gates’ Los Angeles home. “Make yourselves at home, ” he said flipping on the TV to watch Bravo. We set-up shop on the third floor’s backyard for the San Diego December cover shot, next to the pool. The black suit and tie (all his own clothing) accompanied the grey backdrop perfectly. Then we moved inside to get clicks of Gates lounging on his suede L-couch, to match his suede button-down olive green shirt, and further in the kitchen wearing active wear. We wanted him to look comfortable, relaxed. His home was a picture-perfectly decorated in creams and blues with gold accents throughout.
Photographer Travis McCoy used a Canon 5D Mark III W/ 24-70mm or 70-200mm lens and for lighting he used a mixture of daylight and Profoto Pro 8 strobe packs. “Future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates was an absolute pleasure to work with, ” McCoy said. He greeted us at his door with a big smile and welcomed us into his home for the day. “Antonio is incredibly photogenic and made my job very easy.”
McCoy asked Gates’ wife, Sasha, to accompany him on a few shots after continuously making him laugh behind the scenes. “You were waiting for this moment all day, ” Antonio joked with her.
Their LA offseason home is currently up for sale and they plan to look for a more family-friendly option to pair with their San Diego abode. With two kids under 3 years old and two floors separating their bedrooms, it was time for a change.
The shoot concluded with more laughs and, as we wrapped up, Gates was on to getting ready for the rest of the day’s busy schedule, which included going to look at a new house that sounded promising.
Not too shabby for an off day.
