We Can’t Keep Our Hands Off These Donuts in LA

Glazed, Old Fashioned, Crullers, Twists, Jelly, cream-filled, Long Johns, Dutchies, Malasadas, Bomboloni …
A variety of donuts at this very moment lie behind the glass counter begging to be eaten. There are sweet ones, savory, salted, frosted, fried and baked. Here at LOCALE we have a special bond with donuts. We put together a list of locations where we like to get our fingers sticky. You can eat them for breakfast, dessert, midnight snack or any time the mood strikes (which is basically weekly). Lucky for us, donut stores across the county are open for business at various hours-day and night. We know you can relate to the happiness that donuts bring. Remember back in the day when hanging out at the donut shop became a lifestyle? Things have changed, we’ve since then grown up, but so has the donut! There are so many different types of donuts. Just to offer a few examples from opposite sides of the spectrum, think about the bacon donut and the fōnut (the say don’t call it a donut, but it’s pretty close).
Whatever your preference is, donuts continue to be the All-American favorite when it comes to the sweet breakfast (or dessert or lunch or midnight snack) treats. This confection may or may not have been started by the Dutch, with their Olykoeks, or “oil cakes” dating back to the mid 19th century. Back then, they took a cake, formed it into balls and fried it in pork fat until they turned golden brown, only then were they ready for consumption. Whether it was the Dutch, French, Russians, Native Americans or whoever wants to take credit for this beloved office, birthday or Saturday morning snack, we are thankful donuts are around today. Now these breakfast rings are available with a wide range of options from the creative chefs across the U.S.A.
There are plenty of donut shops to choose from in LA to get your preferred fried pastry. Here we list a few of the best spots in town to get your donut fix.
Donut Fact: Doughnut was shortened to Donut in the 1920s when a New York based doughnut machine corporation began looking at international markets. They wanted to create a shorter, phonetic sounding name, in hopes for a higher appeal abroad.

The mission behind Fōnuts was to raise the bar when it comes to coffee and donuts. The owners, a celebrated Los Angeles pastry chef, Waylynn Lucas, and a gluten-free baking genius, Nancy Truman, wanted to put a twist on donut making while offering gluten-free and vegan options. Instead of frying them, as they traditionally are, they either bake or steam them, using natural ingredients, without sacrificing that fluffy, gooey texture we all know and love.
Native Knowledge: They offer vegan and gluten-free options
Fun Facts: Nancy Truman is a voice actress and has a reoccurring role on the TV show Handy Mandy.
