These Classes Will Make Sure That Extra Turkey Doesn’t Call For Loosening Your Belt

Written By: Jamee Lind

Your grandmother’s fresh-baked apple pie was not created with a calorie tracker in mind, and she will expect you to have a piece when you come to visit, despite your LA lifestyle of gluten-free or dairy-doom. Keep your waist at its summer size with a few of the below majorly fun workouts, from kick-boxing a dinosaur-sized bag to cycling in a room that resembles a dance club. Plus, for every class you take, a piece of apple pie or cup of eggnog is eliminated from your body and sent to calorie heaven. Amen.

To the Window, To The Wall

THE WALL Fitness

Have you ever asked yourself, “How can I live it up, make friends and burn calories at the same time?” THE WALL is here to answer your workout party prayers. Their “123STACK” class pushes you, at your own pace, and you’re encouraged by your instructor and fellow classmates every step of the way. Plus, if this core/circuit training/cycling combo workout isn’t enough social stimulation for you, you can make friends during class to go out with after and celebrate your glorious victory and newly toned muscles. “When people come here, they automatically feel a warm welcome. They don’t need to look a certain way or act a certain way, everyone is welcome here—no matter what size, what age, whatever,” said Lead Instructor Michael Vail. Proof: After I took my first class, the entire class went to happy hour. Cheers to that!

Native Knowledge: Parking is easy if you plan ahead. There are some free spots right in front of the studio, but their multi-level parking lot below the studio offers also 90 minutes free with validation.

Do you sometimes have the urge to punch through walls like The Hulk but lack the hand strength to do so? Try Cru Boxing. Created by world-class boxing trainer, Julian Chua, their most beloved class allows you to make your workout more personal by providing you with your own designated punching bag. “It’s your own heavy bag to go bananas on and you have one instructor leading the pack through the movements,” General Manager Tony Brown said. Their signature group class is a full body, fat-burning, muscle shredding, 50-minute long session of pure, authentic boxing that is perfect for any and all of your Hulk goals, minus the green complexion.

Native Knowledge: Check out their Instagram for specials on gloves so you can kick it—or punch, in this case—in style.

“You never knew your shins could sweat but they can,” said teacher Alice Toyonaga. Stretch and sweat at Modo Yogo, a hot, hot, hot yoga studio that cranks up the heat to maximize the benefits. Come well-hydrated and prepare to sweat off that burger you mistakenly ate while binge-watching fluffy dog videos on Instagram. Toyonaga recommends that beginners start with their “Modo” class so that your body can adjust to stretching in a heated room if you have not done so before. This yoga studio is also eco-friendly, using environmentally sound and sustainable products and materials from the wall beams to the hand soap and everything in between.

Native Knowledge: Every Friday night they host “Karma Modo,” a donation-based class—$7 minimum—that donates the proceeds to the studio’s featured charity.

If CrossFit feels too much like a cult and a self-taught Youtube workout vid is too isolating, Speedplay might be exactly what you need. Build endurance and melt pounds with one of their many HIIT (high-intensity interval training) classes. Their sessions have been deemed more challenging than Orange Theory, and they might leave you in a little pain, but a satisfying, “new butt, who dis?” amount of pain. Spoiler: Rowing is often involved.

Native Knowledge: Save the planet and bring a reusable water bottle, because Speedplay has free filtered water on site.
