Discover Kensington’s Little Slice of Heaven

Try The Haven’s Pizza and Other Tasty Menu Options

Written By: Tyler Holland The Haven

In 1949, Dr. Haven and his son began building a BBQ pit, which later turned into a series of caves stretching for roughly 700 feet, much to the enjoyment of the neighborhood kids. In keeping with this spirit of bringing fun spaces to San Diego’s Kensington neighborhood, The Haven was established behind these caves, creating a unique space where people can enjoy a great meal. Whether a local or from out of town, a strict vegan or lover of all things meat, all tastes are catered to in this space dedicated to bringing everyone together just as those caves did years ago.

The atmosphere is “very comfortable and welcoming, ” says general manager Lisa Dechiara, and the food reflects this. All natural and local ingredients are used as well as gluten free and vegetarian options, creating a menu that includes something for all tastes and needs so no one feels left out. The caprese, made with fresh mozzarella, basil and tomato as well as the antipasto featuring seasonal greens, pepperoni and salami show the diversity in the salad options alone and to top it off, all sauces are made fresh every day. Sandwiches, including the spicy eggplant, caprese and meatball sandwich, are also now on the menu. Of course, being a pizzeria, the pizza is the star of the show with enough options to keep guests coming back again and again.

But what, you may ask, should you try when there are so many tantalizing options? The Cortez is one of The Haven’s most popular options. Made with mozzarella, gorgonzola, fresh arugula, tomatoes, avocado and, last but not least, candied bacon. The ingredients alone are a clear indication as to why this has become a crowd favorite. There is also the Total Package made with garlic sauce, caramelized onions and Brussels sprouts and the Opa, which uses hazelnut pesto, artichokes, sundried tomatoes and feta among its ingredients, to choose from. If these sound good, but you would much rather come up with your own thing, the Haven has you covered. The Your Own Creation section lets you choose from a nine or 14 inch pizza and add your own sauce, cheese, protein, and veggies. Feeling like pepperoni and jalapenos with spicy pizza sauce and feta cheese? You can have that and anything else you can think of. An upgrade to gluten free or wheat crust is also available and all crust is hand tossed and made daily.

All this talk of food is enough to build anyone’s appetite, but what to wash it down with? The Haven always has four rotating taps and four that stay on permanently. Local selections include 32 North, Stone and Societe and for the wine lovers out there, Bell Town chardonnay and Trone Syrah are always good choices. If you’re looking to save money in the New Year but still want to go out, fret not. Happy hour runs Monday- Friday from 4-6 p.m. and daily deals such as half off beer pitchers on Mondays and all day lunch specials on Wednesdays will keep your wallet happy and your hunger satisfied. Can’t make it to the restaurant? Delivery is available through services such as GrubHub and UberEats. Plus, if you decide to dine in, the patio is dog friendly so your furry friend can tag along, too!
