RYU Apparel just recently opened the doors to their new Abbot Kinney location in Venice. The Canadian line of luxury athletic apparel, whose name stands for “Respect Your Universe,” is the latest on-trend fashion import to grace LA’s upscale-eclectic neighborhood. With an aesthetic that CEO Marcello Leone describes as “urban athletic,” the fashion-conscious, wellness-minded brand has scouted the perfect spot for their debut opening.

Leone is undertaking a large-scale, sartorial re-branding of the global wellness movement—in a decidedly chic direction. “Nobody needs another pair of sweatpants, you have to think differently,” he explained in a press release. “The tailored fit of RYU combines function with fashion and I’m determined to introduce [it to] the world [of] urban athletic apparel. You only have to look at our products to see the difference.”

Many athleisure lines feature loud and colorful prints, but RYU prides itself on creating garments that are easily transitional from the street to the gym. With 22 patents either pending or granted, each item boasts the meticulous design and construction expected of a luxury line, all in a minimalist-friendly color palette. Selling apparel and accessories for both men and women, the health-savvy professional need not sacrifice style or sophistication when fitting work-outs into his or her busy schedule.

The business model further distinguishes itself by transforming the ordinary shopping environment into an engaging communal destination. With respect as their central tenet, open-minded, growth-oriented individuals can gather for weekly fitness and wellness courses taught by local professionals.

The line’s sartorial edge is evident throughout, even visible in the building’s architecture and decor. Designed by Tony Robbins, the interior features industrial accents like cast-iron fixtures, steel beams, and distressed wood to evoke the feel of an old-school training facility. A mural by artist Noah Abrams is the only adornment to the otherwise clean, white walls. Similar to West Elm—the younger, greener offshoot of Pottery Barn—Leone has honed-in on a formidable millennial subgroup.

Socially speaking, RYU is doing something revolutionary: physically constructing a common ground for the hip crowds, the spiritually-inclined and every individual in between to come together. Emphasizing wellness and an appreciation for the finer things in life, the guiding principles behind the line—individuality, community, and most of all, respect—have the potential to align seemingly disparate value systems in the shared vision of a wellness-oriented lifestyle.

The buzz of the Abbot Kinney location in August precedes September openings in Newport Beach and Williamsburg.
