The LA County Fair first opened its doors in 1922 on a former beet field in Pomona to 100,000 attendees. The annual event serves as a link between California’s agricultural industry and the general public. This year, fair-goers can enjoy summer days filled with food, activities and entertainment. With this year’s theme, ticket holders can “get their kicks on Route 66” from Aug. 31-Sept. 23, Labor Day included, with the except for closures on Mondays and Tuesdays. Here are five things to get excited about this fair season:

More Fun for Less Dough

The Route 66 theme will give guests a chance to buy season passes and parking so you can save some cash for more rides and fair snacks. Seniors can expect discounted tickets, and Costco members can get four tickets with a parking pass and 44 ride and game tickets.

Native Knowledge: Route 66 stops in Santa Monica at the end of the pier.

Music in the Air

New stage performances will include music by Nicky Jam, comedy stand-up by Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, an appearance by The Beach Boys and so much more.

Native Knowledge: You can buy private party boxes with room to dance for the end of summer concert series.

When You Need a Break From the Rides

Free shows and exhibitions will include local talent from the local community, virtual reality, computer gaming, the Haunted 66 Halloween Super Show and the Alt 66 fine art exhibition that will invite guests to experience Route 66 and its history like never before. Think immersive environments, all designed by 18 artists from the Greater Los Angeles area.

Native Knowledge: The curator for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will help judge the fine art exhibit.

The Most Important Part: Food

New this year is the Route 66 and Fantastic Fair Food competition. Anyone over 18 years can submit their best quirky fair cuisine. Winners will be judged on taste, originality, creativity, appearance, presentation and ease of preparation.

Native Knowledge: Event guests have enjoyed LA County fair food like fried hot sauce, bacon fried s’mores and bacon nutella pickle in the past.

Find Some Zen

It wouldn’t be LA without some yoga! The fair will hold a yoga social on Sept. 8. No need to bring your mat, it’s part of your admission! The $30 fee also gives you all-day admission to the event, a weekday return ticket, access to their wellness boutique and a free week of yoga from studio sponsors.

Native Knowledge: International Yoga Day is June 21.
