The Grand Return of a Simple, Sustainable Staple: AMMO To Go

Written and Photographed By: Christine Williamson AMMO To Go

Los Angeles natives may remember AMMO’s original location on Highland Avenue, which catered to Hollywood’s entertainment community for nearly 20 years. AMMO founder Amy Sweeney was a pioneer in showcasing and celebrating whole grains, pristine organic produce, and sustainable proteins, establishing a faithful following of well-traveled diners, food artisans, and chefs. Today, Sweeny—along with the help of Chef Mike Garber—helm both the newest carnation of AMMO at the Hammer Museum and AMMO-To-Go, which is located on Melrose Avenue.

If you must stay, AMMO To Go is most definitely a great solo-dining destination. Its petit interiors are stylish—warm yet minimalist—with coffees, teas, and house-made goods welcoming you at the counter. Seating is minimal, hence AMMO To Go, so pull up early if you want to stake out a spot for people watching (it’s fantastic here) with your morning cold brew, provided by Caffe Luxxe.

AMMO begins the day early, with fresh baked muffins and scones and insanely popular breakfast bowls. With options ranging from Farmer’s Market fruit and house granola, warm quinoa with almond milk, roasted nuts, dates, cranberries, coconut oil, maple syrup and cardamom, or brown rice with house made chicken sausage, mushrooms, roasted carrots, kale and pickled fennel (yes, you can put an egg on it).

Moving into lunch, AMMO applauds everything we love about Los Angeles; signature beef burgers, braised kale grilled cheese, a veggie sandwich stuffed with avocado and feta, and their most popular dish, Alexander’s Brown Rice Bowl, featuring broccoli, crispy snap peas, and fresh pico de gallo. It’s beloved among AMMO’s hip crowd.

Chef Mike Garber also preps a daily selection of seasonal salads and sides and offers a casual selection of cookies and dessert. Weekend warriors: stop by AMMO for brunch before you hit the Melrose-Fairfax Flea, or before gallery-hopping and shopping on nearby La Brea Ave. Weekday workaholics: call in for a colorful Cobb salad and watch everyone in the office envy your chic take out.
