Q: How long have you been designing kitchens, baths and closets in the desert?
Benjamin Sullivan: I have been an interior designer for 20 years plus. I’ve been designing client kitchens, baths and closets here in the Coachella Valley for 10 years
Q: Do you have a favorite type of design?
BS: Design is a funny thing. It changes and evolves with each client’s needs. I am known locally for my midcentury/modern designs, though known [nationally] for my classic designs.
Q: What do you find most challenging?
BS: I sell reality to my clients. I get a lot of people walking in wanting their new spaces at the HGTV price and time frame. I have to always burst that bubble and give them the reality that those shows are produced and made to make people go out and buy those items being placed. It’s all about product placement.
Q: What do you find most rewarding?
BS: Repeat business with former clients. I have so many clients over the 20 years that I still do homes for around the globe. Now I have their children coming to me for their homes.
Q: You are a local Palm Springs resident. How do you view your role in the community?
BS: Giving back to the community. I buy and source locally. I try to keep as much of my business in the desert as possible.
Q: What inspired you to enter the kitchen, bathroom and closet design industry?
BS: I was born in the industry. I’ve designed so many amazing houses over the years, but in every home I enjoyed the design and building of the kitchens, baths and closets more than any other rooms in the house. Those were always the most challenging, so when I moved to the desert, I built my practice on those three areas and to this day, I love my job more than ever.
