Stretchy Pants May Be Necessary

For too long, vegans longingly gazed at their carnivorous friends as they happily chowed down on tacos. Alas, the last few years have seen plant-based variations in abundance. Ingredients like jackfruit, cashew cheese and more have ensured that tacos are more accessible now than ever before. But the real question is, who does it best? I give you LA’s Best Vegan Tacos contest taking place this Saturday, Sept. 15. In its third year, the spicy soirée will be even more unforgettable to people’s taste buds than the year before. Here are a few reasons you should buy your tickets ASAP:

Let’s Taco ‘Bout This
Meat-based taco aficionados need to open their eyes and broaden their minds because the tacos served up at this event are crazy delicious. The ingredients are complex, multilayered and masterfully used to trick the palate into a state of taco-induced ecstasy. Meat is instantly forgotten as you bite into perfectly marinated vegetables, meat alternatives and salsas that would make your mom’s pico de gallo blush with jealousy. “The Vegan Taco Contest was inspired by my sister Mollie Engelhart who owns Sage Vegan Bistro,” explained Co-owner of Gracias Madre and Cafe Gratitude, Ryland Engelhart. “She hosted a vegan grilled cheese contest over three years ago and I thought to myself, ‘The one thing people love more than grilled cheese, especially in California, is tacos.’”
Sorry Coachella, but this all-star roster of restaurants, and the chefs that make them so coveted is second to none. “I was inspired to create an event that showcases chefs’ creativity with plant-based tacos,” added Engelhart. Here is the final list of who will be dishing out the goods:
–Café Gratitude Chefs Beto Roque & Hugo Ramos
–Gracias Madre Chef Miguel Gutiérrez
–Sage Vegan Bistro Chefs Mollie and Elias Sosa Engelhart
–Cooking With Om Chef Om Rishikesh
–Vegatinos Chef Alex Vargas
–Cena Vegan Chef Carmen Santillan
–Chispi Modernista Cocina Chef Emmanuel Nuñez
–Just Vegana Chefs Jae & Yanet Tuiolosega
–Tacos La Tehuanita Chef Richard Chang
–Amo Nakatl Asada Chef Tony Oseguera
Cheers to You!
With all the heat and flavor that comes along with a full day of chowing down on expertly crafted tacos, you’ll need equally satisfying beverages to wash it all down. Cool things down with faves like GT’s Kombucha, Genius Juice, Boochcraft, agua fresca, beer micheladas and more. *Starts to feel thirsty*
The Bigger Picture
We all love beer, tacos and the like, but the best part about coming together for this shindig is that proceeds will be donated to Voto Latino. The organization aims to build a stronger and more inclusive democracy here in the USA by recognizing the innate leadership of Latinos through visionary digital campaigns, pop culture and the many grassroots voices that need to be heard. They provide programs that educate and inspire Latinos to be agents of change within and outside of the community. “We love to bring the community together around good food we all love—tacos. [They] celebrate the many flavors of life,” explained Engelhart.
Foodies can also take home prizes from raffles, get some swag from merch stands and dance along to a live DJ. Those micheladas will come in handy come time to hit the dancefloor.
The event will take place at One Santa Fe in the Arts District, and tickets can be purchased by clicking here. “Mañanero” tickets give you early access from noon to 5 p.m., while general admission gets you in from 1 to 5 p.m.
Your ticket includes ten tacos (one from each contestant) and complimentary drinks from their vendors. Beer and cocktails not included in the ticket price. See you there!
