“Mean Gurlz” Parody Brings the Belly Laughs to Rockwell Table & Stage

This Unauthorized Musical Parody Channels Mean Girls with Jokes Galore

Rockwell Table & Stage does it again—with two hours straight of nonstop belly laughs, it’s amazing nobody in the audience went into cardiac arrest. The Unauthorized Musical Parody (UMPO) of Mean Gurlz brings you back to your teen years, but this time with hilarious one-liners channeling today’s pop and political culture.

For instance, Corbin Reid (Regina George) has a solo, singing none other than Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch,” and Briana Cuoco (Karen) sings Ace of Base’s “The Sign” as she aims to predict the weather with her boobs.

“It is my goal to take what people love about a film and pair it with what people love about the decade,” says Co-Writer and Executive Producer Kate Pazakis. “UMPO is very much, like it’s source material, a roller coaster of emotions. [This show] is a love letter to what Tina Fey, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and the rest of the cast created 13 years ago.”

Even the cocktails of the evening had Mean Girls associated names—The Plastics, White Gold Hoop Earrings, Glen Coco, Buttered Muffin, Burn Book, 1-3-5, and more!

The cast puts forward their all to execute each Mean Girls character. E.K. Dagenfield crossdresses for the role of Janis Ian, with painted nails, hair clips, leggings, and all. Reid even fell off the stage during the performance! Anything for the sake of comedy, right? To her credit, Rockwell’s stage is quite an intimate space for physical comedy. But since the cast seemingly is able to take liberties with ad lib commentary, she later worked her fall into a joke seamlessly.

However, the most memorable, and perhaps the most jaw-dropping, one-liner of the night was during the performance’s closing. When Ryan O’Connor (Narrator) informs the audience of each character’s fate, he makes a specific dig to two celebrities sitting in the audience—Rumer and Scout Willis (two of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ daughters). The spotlight shines over characters Janis Ian and Ms. Norbury, and O’Connor says, “And these two went on to have the most scandalous affair since Ashton Kutcher and YOUR MOM!” as he points down to Rumer and Scout. The crowd had a drastic variety of responses: some jumping out of their seats with deep belly laughs and screams, some sit in disbelief, and some look at each other with wide eyes. Thankfully, Rumer and Scout were good sports and laughed right along.

UMPO Mean Gurlz is the ninth show in the UMPO series. Be sure to tune in for future UMPO shows at Rockwell Table & Stage for more hilarity…and cocktails. The show runs Thursday to Sunday until April 15th.
