Fun, sun and volleyball! This past weekend, Manhattan Beach celebrated the 6-Man Volleyball Beach Tournament along with the Jr. 6-Man. The adult 6-Man Tournament took place on both Friday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug. 5 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Plus, the Jr. 6-Man happened Sunday, Aug. 6. The tournament, known as the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Beach Tournament, is an homage to Charlie Saikley, who passed away 12 years ago this summer. He had the reputation of being the “Godfather of Beach Volleyball”.

Saikley was the man about town in South Bay when it came to volleyball. It began in the 1960’s when he started off as a school teacher at El Segundo High School and working summers in the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation department. Through his work with Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation, Charlie was able to create the first volleyball instruction program. He worked largely with the city’s youth to introduce them to the sport.

The event officially began in 1974, and as a nod to his vision shortly after his passing, his family began working very closely with Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation to bring back the family-friendly feel to the event. The legendary Saikley focused on the core components of beach volleyball, which was world-class talent incorporated with the beach lifestyle. This year marks the third of the Jr. 6-Man tournament. Charlie strongly believed in growing the youth’s love for the sport.

Now it’s time to spill all the details on what went on throughout the weekend at this fun-filled event:

Held at the Manhattan Beach Pier, the teams were male and female and even had costume themes. My personal favorite was the ladies’ “Baywatch” theme.

With a little over 13 teams and ages ranging from 18-50+, perfect weather and lots of people cheering the teams on, it was the perfect California beach scene. There were tons of smiles and laughter all around.

Rockstar Energy Drink, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Toyota, Jolyn Swimwear and Clothing Co. and Spalding were all sponsors of this annual event.
