8 Must-See Events at 2022 Modernism Week in Palm Springs

From Preview Parties to Architectural Tours and Vintage Car Shows, Here Is Everything You’ll Want to Do During Modernism Week This February!

It’s almost that time of year to celebrate midcentury architecture and design at Modernism Week, held in Palm Springs from Feb. 17-27! This year’s festival will spotlight 350 events, including the Modernism Show & Sale and the Signature Home Tour. There will be architectural walks, tours of the classic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, fabulous parties and informative discussion. We’ve outlined eight must-see events that will sell out, so buy your tickets today! Modernism Week 2022

 

1 | Shop Till You Drop

If there’s one thing not to miss, it’s the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center. You’ll find 20th and 21st century decor items, artwork and textiles, along with the Modern Design Expo, which features homes inspired by classic midcentury modern design. This event is at 10 a.m. from Feb. 19-21. Tickets are $30 for admission to both shows with return entry permitted.

2 | Enjoy a Sneak Peek!

Beat the crowds before the show opens to the public by attending the Preview Party for the Modernism Show & Sale. This event is at 6 p.m. on Feb. 18, and the ticket price of $110 benefits Modernism Week. Your ticket includes drinks, hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and the opportunity to get first dibs on some unique furniture and decor.

 

3 | See a Secluded Desert Gem

The 75th Anniversary of the Lautner Compound Twilight Champagne & Nibbles Reception and Tour offers a rare evening opportunity to visit “The Lautner,” which is architect John Lautner’s stunning desert hideaway. Sip champagne and enjoy hors d’oeuvres while owners Tracy Beckmann and Ryan Trowbridge inspire you with stories about their restoration of this architectural oasis. This event takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 and tickets are $80.

4 | Explore Vintage Trailers

The Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show will make you want to take to the open road on a big adventure! You will see an amazing collection of vintage trailers, campers, buses and motorhomes in one of the largest vintage trailer shows in the US. Meet the owners and custom-restoration craftspeople who can tell you about their trailer’s history and travels. This show is on Feb. 26 and 27 and costs $25.

5 | Cycle Past Midcentury Marvels

Hot Purple Energy is a local solar energy company that celebrates midcentury architecture. Their self-guided Architectural Bike Ride will take you through several Palm Springs neighborhoods that feature midcentury and solar-powered homes. Although this excursion is planned as a group event, you’ll have the opportunity to explore on your own and at your own pace. This tour takes place on Feb. 19 and 26 and is free. To make things even better, Palm Springs in February has ideal weather for outdoor activities like this!

6 | Car Junkies Unite!

If you’re a vintage car lover, you won’t want to miss the Modernism Week Vintage Car Show on Feb. 21. Over 50 classic cars from the ‘50s through the ‘80s will be shown in front of the Palm Springs Convention Center. So if you’re going to Modernism Week’s Show & Sale on that Monday, you can also enjoy the car show right outside the convention center. Admission is free.

 

7 | Tour an Iconic Home

A major highlight of Modernism Week 2022 is its Showcase Home Tour: Casa Terra. Designed by interior designer and TV host Bobby Berk, this 5,000-square-foot Spanish style estate is now a world-class resort-style residence, complete with Berk’s unique touches and design. You will be shuttled to the property, which is available for tours on select dates from Feb. 18-27, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $65.

8 | Get Inspired

Attend a presentation by one of the many amazing speakers at Modernism Week 2022 who are all experts in their fields. The featured talks include the Keynote Presentation: Jeanne Gang, FAIA ‘Making Architecture’ (Feb. 19, $45/$65). Other notables include ‘As I Knew Him, My Dad Rod Serling’ (Feb. 22, $20), ‘MAD Architects: Global Work’ (Feb. 21, $15), ‘Remodeling Midcentury Modern Marvels With Atomic Ranch’s Jickie Torres’ (Feb. 18, $12) and ‘Preserving Los Angeles: A Kaleidoscope Tour of L.A.’s Built Heritage’ (Feb. 19, $12).

 

9 | Going, Going, Gone!

The online bidding event, called the ‘Best of Modernism’ Auction, will run from now until Dec. 12.
