Even in California, the mecca of health food, junk and unhealthy meal options far outweigh sensible choices. We all know what we should eat, but when you are in a hurry and need to grab something on the run, it’s just so easy to make poor choices. Blue Bowl Superfoods in Orange has entered the scene to put an end to all that. With a focus on superfoods—those foods you should be eating but probably don’t—presented in a healthy way, Blue Bowl has its own definition of “fast food.” Here you can get a quick snack or meal and feel good that you are fueling your body with the healthy calories it needs to make it through the day.

Today, acai bowls are a staple food for many Californians, and there are loads of places that advertise selling acai bowls like coffee shops and even convenience stores. It seems that anyone will throw one of these together for you. However, the original appeal of acai is its superfood health benefits from boosting your immune system to improving blood circulation.

This concept has been lost on some places that crank out industrial-sized tubs of acai topped with lots of sweetened coconut and chocolate chips. In many cases, it’s easy to see how the original health benefits can easily be drowned in a sea of sugar-laden toppings. This is not the case at Blue Bowl, where not only can you experiment with bases other than acai, but the toppings are real ingredients that you can feel good about eating. At Blue Bowl, they sell bowls in a fun, creative and, most importantly, healthy way.

Blue Bowl was founded by Teague Savitch and Ishmael Lozano. Teague is an army veteran who worked in intelligence operations overseas. In these conditions, it was difficult to come across healthy food on a regular basis. Coming back to the US, he found many Californians were also on the hunt to find quick and healthy food options. “Ish” is a veteran of the health food industry. Together, this pair created the Blue Bowl concept from scratch—the same approach they invite the customer to take when creating their own bowl. “There are no blenders here, we want this to be a place where people feel comfortable hanging out,” said Lozano.

There isn’t a fixed menu, so you can create the bowl with ingredients you like, exactly as you want it. “We’ve created a no rules approach where it’s all about options,” Savitch said. Not craving an acai bowl? No problem, you can change out the base—try pitaya, steel cut oats, chia pudding or some of each if you’d like. Then move down the line to choose your toppings—from standards like bananas and blueberries and granola to more exotic options like goji berries, hemp seeds, apple honee (a vegan honey made from apple juice) or cacao nibs. There’s peanut butter, of course, but also almond and cashew butters. Would you like some cinnamon or pumpkin seeds to top it off? The number of combinations are endless. There’s also options when it comes to size so you won’t walk away with a quart of acai—that is, unless you want to!

If you walk into the superfood shop and feel overwhelmed by all the options (the toppings are unlimited), Savitch and Lozano offer the Lazy Blue—a premade bowl with your heart’s desires. A mix of acai and pitaya, this bowl comes with a whopping 12 different toppings. Pumpkin flax granola, strawberries, bananas, almond butter, cacao nibs, coconut shavings, almonds, chia and hemp seeds, goji berries, pumpkin seeds and apple honee, this bowl is chock full of delicious, healthy superfoods that will keep you going throughout your day.

Whether you’re making a quick stop on your way to work, taking the kids for a lunch-time snack, or stopping in for an after-dinner treat, Blue Bowl offers the sweet and satisfying meal you’ve been looking for. The best part? It’s guilt-free. “At the end of the day, we are in the business of serving health,” Savitch said.
