Manchester Grand Hyatt sure knows how to throw a Volksfest! Located on the bayfront harbor adjacent to Seaport Village, Sally’s Fish House & Bar was the perfect outdoor venue to enjoy OktoBIERfest, a take on the annual Bavarian beer festival and funfair that is celebrated not just at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany this time of year, but all throughout the world. Oktobierfest at Manchester Grand Hyatt

While San Diego provided the beautiful sunny weather, Sally’s “Hofbrauhaus” served delicious traditional German fare like bratwurst, jumbo pickles & warm pretzels with Bavarian cheese sauces. Brats and brotchens (buns) were cooked on the large open grill as the scent of sauerkraut and tasty bacon wrapped sausages filled the air. Oktobierfest at Manchester Grand Hyatt

Along the harbor boardwalk, large metallic balloons of overflowing beer mugs and letters in blue, silver and white spelled out the word “BIER.” From the hotel lobby you were greeted with colorful decorations leading to the outdoor festivities. No matter which direction you entered the free event, the Manchester Grand Hyatt did a fantastic job transforming the usual beachfront ambiance to that of a sight from Bavaria itself. Oktobierfest at Manchester Grand Hyatt

A live band played old time tunes and cover music providing the background sounds. A white picket fence surrounded a grassy area especially set up for families and pooches alike. Dog treats, toys and water bowls were surrounded by colorful lawn chairs that afforded shaded areas for festival guests and their pets. Lengthy picnic tables, adorned with beer steins and autumn decorations filled the lawn and bar areas. Oktobierfest at Manchester Grand Hyatt

Made up of beer barrels and rustic table tops, the outside bar donned festive decorations of blue and white flags, German symbols and fun beer décor. Wait staff dressed in lederhosen and trundles offered up San Diego local craft brews keeping with the theme. Our favorites of the day included Alesmiths “Oktoberfest” & Arrogants “Wussie” Pilsner. Traditional German wines of Riesling & Sauvignon Blanc were also poured alongside Sally’s own cocktails like the Malibu Sunburn & Bloody Marys.

We spent the afternoon eating huge bratwurst sandwiches, dipping hot pretzels, drinking LOTS of beer and playing lawn games like corn hole and oversized jenga. We danced to the sweet lofty sounds of guitars and cellos as we celebrated OktoBIERfest with cheers of “Prost! Prost! Prost!” As the sun set over the yachts in the downtown harbor marina it was time to say “auf wiedersehen” to yet another day well spent at the Manchester Grand…
