San Diego’s famous Gaslamp Quarter embraced the grand opening of the first ever Pendry Hotel in February. Pendry San Diego, located on 5th and J street, is the debut hotel of the new Pendry brand by Montage International in partnership with The Robert Green Development Company. The plush hotel sits 12 stories high, features six unique food and beverage concepts, a luxurious spa, a grand ballroom, a nightclub, rooftop pool, 35,000 square feet of meeting and special event space, parlor and salon rooms, and many other stylish amenities. You’ll find some of the best views of the historic Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, and the downtown skyline here.

Perfectly posh, enter The Pendry to a beautiful array of luxury, modern and contemporary décor and design. One of the first things you’ll notice are the drop-dead-gorgeous chandeliers of gold and glass perched above the inner communal dining and marketplace Provisional Kitchen, Café & Mercantile. It is here you’ll find an espresso bar, decadent desserts, gourmet eats by Executive Chef Chris Osbourne and a retail shop set inside an indoor greenhouse.

If you’re staying as a guest in one of Pendry’s 317 rooms or one of the impressive 36 suites, you’ll find yourself checking in at the hotel lobby that boasts the rounded desk of your modern dreams. Arched walls and velvet sofas provide an inviting waiting area, square thick wainscoting adorns the ceiling and light fixtures reminiscent of New York City’s mobster era surround a bell desk made of luscious wood that sits atop large mirrored tiles.

The modern look continues into one of Pendry’s 317 rooms or one of the impressive 36 suites. The bathrooms mix vintage woods, marble, and feature stunning oversized luxury rain showers with two walls of glass, just in case you want to check out the magnificent downtown views while you are bathing. The rooms themselves boast king size beds with wood and leather headboards and dreamy soft white linens. Glossy white nightstands equipped with the lighting of decadent white lamp shades with black trim provide a perfect area for bedtime reading or mood lighting, whichever you prefer. A plaid settee (sofa lounge) provides a sitting area next to a large picturesque window perfect for taking in the SD skyline. A large wooden desk provides working space for business travelers and staycationers alike.

Although the rooms at The Pendry are perfection, you won’t stay in them too long. There’s so much to do within the hotel itself that you will surely want to explore it all. Begin the day at The Pool House, a rooftop pool and lounge area on the third floor, perfect for brunch and poolside cocktails while soaking up the sun and California lifestyle. An afternoon massage or meditation session at Spa Pendry should be high atop your afternoon things-to-do list before heading to dinner at the exquisite Lionfish, located on the hotel’s main floor. Recently opening with huge success by renowned Partner and Executive Chef Jose “JoJo” Ruiz, Lionfish is a fine dining restaurant featuring modern coastal cuisine— seafood and prime meats highlighted with flavors from an array of coasts around the world.

On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays plan on late-night music and VIP service at Oxford Social Club, Pendry’s underground (literally!) nightlife space. It is the place to see and be seen. Oxford Social Club is quite intimate and relaxed with plush decorative furnishings resembling that of a private residence. A massive chandelier awaits as you enter, a large bar hosts a curated cocktail program and celebrity sightings are what you are in for at Oxford Social Club, San Diego’s newest hot spot.

There isn’t a spot inside Pendry that isn’t oozing in the “little details.” Everything is done top shelf, classy and chic. Congratulations on a spectacular debut, Pendry; you have done it right and done it very, very well.

Native Knowledge: If you’re lucky enough to stay at one of the suites or reserve one of the many VIP areas around the hotel, then you may be privy to the “secret” elevator that provides access to Lionfish, The Pool House and Oxford Social Club.

Other Mentionable Eats and Drinks Within the Hotel:

-Nason’s Beer Hall – The Pendry recently debuted Nason’s featuring local craft and international beers, comfort food and bar games. Its name came from the early 1900’s location of Nason & Co. Farmers Market which is where Nason’s Beer Hall now sits.

-Fifth & Rose – Featuring elevated bar fare and craft cocktails Fifth & Rose is inspired by a host’s living room. Comfortable, welcoming, yet sophisticated, with pretty decorative details like candles and gorgeous displays of fresh roses.
