Put All of Your Eggs in One (Picnic) Basket

Think about it—eating on the ground—no furniture required. Table and chairs provided by your very own Mother Earth. Food provided by whatever’s in that picnic basket of yours. It’s up to you to make it good-nature has done enough.
Each and every summer we (even more so in SoCal because we’re spoiled) are provided this great worldly luxury. Palm trees, sand and green grass galore—come on, even if it’s fake—we’re a lucky bunch of folks and we enjoy what our outsides have to offer.
With the hottest season now in full swing, Long Beach’s numerous outdoor events such as the Long Beach Municipal Band concerts at Marine Stadium Park and Granada Beach’s Moonlight Movies on the Beach practically beg for additional outings. It’s officially high time for one of the great treasures of the world: a good ol’ fashioned American picnic. You’ve got the wicker basket, you’ve got the fancy mini-corkscrew, and you’ve got the red-and-white-checkered blanket. It’s time for the food.
While you’re savvy with planning fun, your cooking could use some work. Not to fear, your picnic qualms have been resolved.
Local favorite, Restauration, located conveniently on 4th Street, has got you stocked. Featuring a variety of different healthy foods available, to-go style, and perfect for filling your basket, you may just have to (politely) fend off your neighboring picnickers wanting to swap for a soggy sandwich. But who in their right mind would swap for a mushy hoagie when you have pizza? Particularly a pizza that goes by the name, “The Boss Pizza” (seriously). Roasted beech mushrooms, housemade Italian sausage, pasilla peppers and scallions baked in a wood-fired oven and tossed with Parmesan, Buffalo mozzarella, and tomato sauce. Every other pizza in town already knows who’s boss.
Now for the salad game—you’ll officially be the envy of the park with the healthy and delicious Quinoa Salad. Fresh roasted peaches meet yellow wax beans and farm lot greens. Herbed chèvre is mixed with basil and scallions then tossed with a Champagne vinaigrette, creating a healthy side for that dominant Italian fix you just experienced.
But alas, what’s a picnic without dessert? Throw in some dark chocolate chip cookies with sea salt to satisfy your sugar craving and SUGAR RUSH! Maybe you’ll be the next one leading the crowd, Gangham style. Which, let’s face it, is the absolute whipped cream and cherry on top of any memorable picnic.
Remember that summer is hot and it’s imperative to stay hydrated with all that extra-curricular picnic-fun, so make sure to pack plenty of liquids. To quench your thirst, grab a Bundaberg Blood Orange Soda, Perrier, and the standard soft drinks that all fit nicely in a picnic basket. They provide a nice boost of color too, because everyone knows, a colorful picnic basket means a fun picnic basket.
One final tip, be sure to bring extra to share because you’re about to make a bunch of new friends. Everyone loves food, everyone loves summer, and everyone, especially, loves you (and your picnic).
