For the Love Birds

Written by: Jackie Bryant

It’s easy to celebrate when you live in a place where people vacation. San Diego’s weather, geography, and range of urban to rural areas make it the perfect city to do any number of exciting things in a short span of time – things that are even more fun with a special someone in tow! Below are some of the best options for eating, drinking, sleeping, and doing that San Diego has to offer for a weekend of love.

Rancho Bernardo Inn
17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive, San Diego, CA 92128 | 888.976.4117 |

Do the two of you just want a quick weekend getaway? If so, head to Rancho Bernardo Inn, which also has great couples’ specials for all of February. A variety of packages gives the options of roses, brewery and winery tours, dinner at the resort’s restaurant, golf packages, and spa treatments. With a luxurious and tranquil setting and so many things to do, you’ll probably find you won’t even want to leave the grounds at all.

Paradise Point
1404 Vacation Road, San Diego, CA 92109 | 858.274.4630 |

As the name implies, when arriving at Paradise Point, you could be forgiven for suddenly thinking you landed on a tropical island instead of Mission Bay. As if that weren’t enough, they have a great Valentine’s Day special that includes dinner at their award-winning waterfront restaurant and two nights in one of their bungalow-style rooms. The resort also has a full suite of spa treatments, and, of course, water sports and beachfront hanging with that special someone.

La Jolla Wine Tours

Keep it green and local by parking the car for a few hours and checking out La Jolla Wine Tours. They offer train-based, walking, and chauffeured wine and beer tours of San Diego County, with special Valentine’s packages for the entire month of February.

3801 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104 | 619.501.6318 |

First things first: you’ll probably need a card and a gift. Make sure you stop by Pigment in North Park, which has a range of cute and artsy Valentine’s Day cards. The inspired home goods store also has a slew of great gifts, in case you’re low on ideas for that too. From jewelry to cookbooks to craft men’s toiletry items to everything you could think of to stock an artisanal bar, this place has it all. They also specialize in succulent arrangements; a longer-lasting and creative alternative to handing off a bouquet of flowers.

San Diego Museum of Art will be hosting love-themed gallery tours, card making workshops. Afterwards, you can enjoy a picnic and drinks for two as well as live music at Panama 66 in Balboa Park.

Keeping with the sunset theme, head to North County for a special menu at the Pacific Coast Grill in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. There’s no set price, so you’re free to order whatever you like on this once-a-year menu that includes special sushi rolls and plenty of lobster.
