Founder Tom Powers’ grandmother actually invented the recipe on her visit from Chicago after the first restaurant opened in Del Mar in 1979. “The Turkey Deluxe was the first sandwich it came on,” Powers said. “Customers began using it on a lot of items including our macaroni salad, which we made back then. It became more and more popular so we added it to a few new sandwiches.”
Tom’s Choice, then BoardMaster, Yesterday’s Special and then the Mini Master—the list of saucy sandwiches continued to grow. “Back then, the sauce was blended different with a more vinegary aftertaste,” Powers continued. “We always called it Sweet & Sour. Years later when other stores opened, it was tweaked by Sergio, myself and Ryan was very much involved in the process. He helped steer us to what the customers wanted. And that’s the way it remains today.”
And today, Sweet & Sour-sauce-loving customers have even referred to Board & Brew’s sauce as “The tears of a unicorn.” People have even said they could drink it straight from the cup. Some are even saying they wouldn’t mind bathing in it—it’s that good!
