“Skyslide” Your Way Down the U.S. Bank Building in Los Angeles

The city’s newest attraction, “Skyslide” allows brave thrill-seekers to be 1, 000 feet above the sidewalks of downtown Los Angeles.

Constructed by glass masters M. Ludvik & Co., the enclosed slide drops from the 70th story, down the U.S. Bank Tower’s face, 45 feet through the smog, ending on the 69th floor.

The structure itself is 72 stories: the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, so the view one gets is literally “top shelf.”

Size, of course, isn’t everything and Singapore-based developer OUE Limited spent some $50 million to make 633 West Fifth Street a little more special than those other steel and glass towers it dwarfs.

Skyspace is more than just its high-profile, selfie-friendly thrill slide, and that is, apparently, as it should be.

“It isn’t enough to be an observation deck, ” Wired magazine noted in a recent article. “It must be a destination. From rooftop rollercoaster rides to a glass-bottomed walkway over the Grand Canyon, architects and engineers are dreaming up increasingly exciting ways to take in the view.”

As such, Skyspace offers not one, but two observation decks. One inside and one “open air” platform provides a 360-degree view of L.A.’s urban terrain.

In addition to the indoor-outdoor views, Skyspace boasts a 360-degree “digital topography wall” that celebrates the city, its landmarks, and neighborhoods.

There is also an “infinity mirror” that replicates reflections, and the “Silhouette Wall” is better experienced than described.

Skyspace hosts private events and has a maximum capacity of 300 persons. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., 365 days a year.

There is a basic daily admission for $19 and three other packages including a $25 pass that allows you to come by during the day to take in the view and then return at night to enjoy the city’s unfolding carpet of lights.

A $27 “Skyslide Combo” buys access to all four levels of the Skyspace complex and $59 purchases a “Sky Pass” good for six visits. Ticket information is available at 213.894.9000 or tickets@OUE-skyspace.com.
