When it comes to Orange County, the options of places to workout are endless. It seems that on almost on every corner there’s either a gym or fitness studio that just opened or one that’s being built. With so many choices, how do you decide where to go? Depending on your #FitnessGoals, you could hop on an elliptical for 30 minutes or you can take your workout seriously and get measurable and visible improvements. If this is the case, KILO Strength Society is the place to be. Unlike other gyms that focus on the quantity of members and variability in equipment, KILO focuses on delivering quality instruction with their own customized equipment.

Q: What inspired you to start KILO?

Stéphane Cazeault: We had moved around a lot working in the fitness industry, mostly training other trainers and coaches. We’d always talked about moving to California.

Alexandra Bernardin: We didn’t know exactly where we wanted to open a gym, so as soon as we arrived here, we drove around Southern California. We came across Huntington Beach and liked it, so we decided to open the gym here.

Q: How is KILO different than other gyms?

AB: You can spend a lot of money on a personal trainer but you really need to have multiple sessions a week to see the benefits. We offer that one-on-one training in a group setting. There are two types of sessions: PRIMEIGHT and Conditioning. Each PRIMEIGHT session focuses on one of the eight primary lifts: squat, front squat, deadlift, overhead press, incline press, bench press, dip and chin-up.

Q: How often do you recommend people come to KILO?

AB: It’s designed for clients to take four PRIMEIGHT and two condition sessions per week. Over two weeks, we work through all of the PRIMEIGHT lifts. We track how much people are lifting each time so they can use this as a starting point the next time they come back to a particular lift. However, we also have a handful of clients that only train with us once or twice a week. We can find something that works for everyone

Q: How did you design the layout of the gym?

AB: We actually designed all the workouts before even one piece of equipment was purchased. Once the program was fully laid out, then we custom ordered what we needed.

Q: How did you decide how to set up all the weights?

AB: It was a process to have everything delivered and set up. Since it was all custom ordered, we never actually saw the equipment or even the color of it before they unloaded it at the gym. Since we already had the workouts planned, we knew exactly how we wanted the equipment set up before it arrived.

Q: What makes your custom equipment so unique?

SC: All of our equipment is Atlantis Strength, which is a company out of Montreal, Quebec. The equipment is geared towards high performance, so the company pays attention to every detail. Each machine is carefully designed to match the human strength curve of each muscle involved in the movement. They are also easily adjustable to everyone’s different body structures.

Q: What is something we can look forward to in the future from KILO Strength Society?

AB: We are very excited to grow over the next year and introduce our concept to many new members in our local community. Starting in 2018, we will be hosting free technique workshops and nutrition talks that anyone will be welcome to attend! We also offer education for strength coaches and personal trainers. In 2017, we had coaches from Australia, Finland, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, United Arab Emirates and India travel to learn our unique philosophies and methodologies on strength training. We have added a few more courses onto our schedule for the future and we are excited to meet many more passionate coaches and grow our “Strength Society” family!

The ABC’s of KILO Strength: During a PRIMEIGHT session, there are three series: the “A” that focuses on the primary lift for the session, the “B” series that increases your overall strength and ability to perform the primary lift and the “C” series that concentrates on injury prevention.

Tank It: We also have conditioning sessions which is an energy system workout that uses different equipment including the TANK.
