Which one Will Try This Weekend?

Written By: Gioia McGuire Unusual SF Restaurants

It’s no secret San Francisco is a mecca for the unusual and unique. From food to drink, a normal night out can turn into one you’ll never forget. Whether you need a password to enter, want to enjoy a themed atmosphere or are simply looking for something just a little different, these spots will leave you thinking, “Did that just happen?”

Unusual SF Restaurants

Double Trouble

Native Knowledge: This speakeasy is hidden within the speakeasy Bourbon & Branch! The detective-themed bar is reservation only, and you must wait outside until prompted for the password before being taken through a series of doors to your destination.

Wilson and Wilson
505 Jones St
San Francisco, CA 94102

Smooth Like Butter

Native Knowledge: This is a must-stop before a night of clubbing; go here for fried and microwaved delicacies like tater tots and SpaghettiOs and, most importantly, jello shots.

Butter
354 11th St
San Francisco, CA 94103
415.863.5964

It’s Tiki Time

Native Knowledge: Happy hour is Wednesday through Friday (yes, Friday!) in this tiki-inspired place, so order a tropical drink and watch the band float by in the lagoon in the middle of the restaurant. Make sure to wait for the simulated tropical storm complete with thunder and rain mist.

Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar
950 Mason St
San Francisco, CA 94108
415.772.5278

Tiny Bars FTW

Native Knowledge: There’s only nine stools in this hole-in-the-wall dubbed the smallest bar in SF, and only bottled beer and a keg is sold from a bathtub full of ice behind the bar. It’s the perfect (mini) neighborhood hangout.

Black Horse London Pub
1514 Union St
San Francisco, CA 94123
415.928.2414

What Goes Around Comes Around

Native Knowledge: The kitchen is only operating the last Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., so grab a seat and enjoy a free meal that’s maintained by their policy of generosity, then pay it forward by paying for a future guest’s meal.

Karma Kitchen
Taste of Himalayas
1700 Shattuck Ave
Berkeley, CA 94709
510.849.4983

Knock, Knock

Native Knowledge: The hostess in The Cavalier will show you through a bookcase to get to this hidden gem, but if you’re arriving after 10 p.m., you’ll have to take the alley entrance. Hint, hint! Look for the pink door.

Marianne’s
360 Jessie St
San Francisco, CA 94103
415.321.6000

Arrrgghhh you Free Saturday Night?

Native Knowledge: Keep your eyes peeled for this hidden treasure! Your only way in is a mysterious red light and a bouncer waiting outside a single door.

Smuggler’s Cove
650 Gough St
San Francisco, CA 94102
415.869.1900
