Q: How did you get started in interior design? Up By Design

Lynn O’Briskie: I believe that lifeless and poorly designed spaces make most people, including myself, feel depressed and unmotivated. Because I am so influenced by my surroundings, I decided years ago that I wanted to be part of the solution by showing clients how transforming a space can change your outlook. I have always been artistic, and after playing in several bands creating music, I made the move to creating interiors as well—and I love it. Up By Design

Q: How has the popularity of home renovation shows helped your business?

LB: People are now more open to unique and creative ideas, such as bold wallpaper and moving away from design styles lacking individuality. Many people find it difficult to go beyond a ‘safe’ and less intimidating neutral color palette, however, I’m noticing that clients are now going out of their comfort zone and welcoming colors into their design.

Q: What are some of the emerging trends for Orange County homes?

LB: I’m happy that vibrant, rich colors on walls, accessories and furniture are taking center stage as all-neutral rooms take a back seat for a while! Matte slate and black kitchen appliances are popping up everywhere and as we continue to see brass hardware and lighting in the kitchen; the combination with black is stunning.

Q: What are your favorite design trends?

LB: As trends come and go, I think I will always have my favorites! Right now, I love wallpaper, especially when it adds color, pattern, and texture to a room. More often than not, I find that polished or brushed brass hardware and lighting in the bathroom and kitchen are unexpected and provide a sophistication that we just don’t see with the typical brushed stainless steel—just be careful that the brass doesn’t look cheap!

Q: What is the first thing that you tell a new client about design?

LB: I encourage my new clients to view prior projects on our website for ideas, but I gently remind them that each photo is a representation of someone else’s vision. My goal is to create a design that reflects your personal style. To avoid a space from feeling cookie-cutter, stuffy or staged, I always ask my clients if they are open to incorporating upcycled items such as tables, dressers, lighting and accessories. Every client has a budget, and this strategy can save money to purchase that ‘one-of-a-kind’ statement piece with the higher price tag.

Q: What are your plans for the future of Up By Design? Up By Design

LB: Interior designers and decorators can sometimes come across as intimidating, especially for those that have a smaller budget. Being approachable and flexible is important to me. I love what I do, and I hope I can continue to encourage those interested in transforming their space to take the leap and give Up By Design a try.

Daily Motto: Lynn’s favorite quote is, “Great design is a good book you can’t put down.”
Making the Band: Lynn has always been artistic, and even played in several bands before she went into interiors.
