That tangy-sweet, crunchy red salad that you have been craving is finally back! After a year and a half of remodeling, Ho Sum Bistro has once again opened its California-Asian fusion doors to Newport Beach. “We’re really happy to be back,” said Owner Ed O’Neill, “We do this for love so much more than money. I think that’s what makes us special,” he continued.

After a fire that destroyed the property in June 2016, O’Neill and his team worked through countless issues with permits, agencies and the city, eventually turning what had he had anticipated to be a six to nine month project into a year and a half of headaches. But the love and support that Ho Sum received on social media cheered him on, “The comments on social media were non-stop every single day,” O’Neill said.

With the official grand re-opening on Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m., guests will finally be able to relive their favorite memories of the restaurant with dishes like the Ho Sum Chicken Salad, dumplings, lettuce wraps and more! Not to worry for the regulars, O’Neill made sure the menu and design stayed the same. “We want to get the restaurant back on its feet with the staples everyone knows and loves. From the look of the menus to the look of the restaurant, I wanted everything to be the same,” O’Neill said.

Not only are the staple items still there, but all the original staff came back as well. “Everybody quit their new jobs to come back. I just put the word out and everyone responded,” O’Neill smiled.

With the exception of the new open-air kitchen where guests can watch their meals being made, the restaurant is almost an exact replica of the bistro OC locals remember. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, dinner or the Champagne Dim Sum Brunch, it’s safe to say that you’ll be dining frequently to get your fix of the meals you’ve been missing since 2016.

Native Knowledge: Come to Ho Sum for happy hour Monday through Friday 3-6 p.m. Munch on your favorites like Ho Sum Dumplings, coconut shrimp and one of O’Neill’s favorites Crispy Crab Bellies for $4.95 to $5.95.
