Calling all sartorially inclined San Diegans—we’ve got news for you! Fashion Week San Diego is just a few weeks away and we’re ready to give you the lowdown. FWSD is San Diego’s largest fashion driven event with two full nights of runway shows. Every year it gets bigger and better and this year is no different. Fashion Week San Diego has been around since 2007 and, from the start, has been all about highlighting the best talents from our local communities; this year, highlighting designers from around the world. Founder, Allison Andrews told LOCALE, “San Diego is the perfect location for a Fashion Week. We are a border city, [and] a port city. It makes sense for there to be a showcase like this in our city.”

And boy is she right, San Diego truly is setup to be a destination and we are easily accessible in terms of importing and exporting merchandise/resources. However, Fashion Week in San Diego doesn’t just make sense on paper, the creatives of San Diego communities are really who have brought this event to life. Andrews offered this insight, “In places like New York and Los Angeles, there are ways and rules, tradition and competition, making it more difficult for emerging designers to make a name for themselves. But San Diego has so much potential for innovation and we are here to encourage that.”

With that being said, for all you lucky ones who will be attending this year’s festivities we’ve got all the details on what you’ve got to look forward to—starting with this year’s designers. From menswear to swimwear to bridal to women’s contemporary, there truly will be something for everyone on the runways this year. Valleau Apparel, for example is a San Diego local business that will be showing this year. Andrews had this to say about the brand, “For this first time this year we have an athletic apparel line on the runway. It is very exciting because the athleisure look is trending right now. We are looking forward to showing off something new that you see integrated into collections but not necessarily an entire line of.”

This year’s runway, will also be featuring some special guest appearances. San Diego local brand, The Stylish Bisou Couture, who, according to Andrews, designs “beautifully detailed clothing for dogs to coordinate with their owners” will be bringing along some of their famous furry friends to make the strut down the runway. In addition to four-legged models, 2015 Winning Designer of FWSD, B.JASH.I, will be bringing along a few friends from America’s Next Top Model. So be sure to look out for these famous faces and snag those photo opportunities.

Last but certainly not least, this year’s festivities will include the Sunday Trunk Show. Andrews shared with LOCALE why it is one of her favorite events exclaiming, “It is one of the most rewarding experiences every year. I get to see designers work their booty’s off taking selfies with admirers, exchanging cash for product and taking orders for others. It is great to see the interactions and have real consumers see the pieces off the runway.” And this is no little trunk show, Andrews shared that last year’s sales from the Trunk Show earned designers around $300, 000. “Some events similar to ours take a percentage of profits from sales but everything a designer sells at our Trunk Show they keep. It is a great way to support these amazing talents and their businesses, ” she said.

So stylish ladies and gentleman of San Diego, we are looking forward to seeing you this year at Fashion Week San Diego.

3 Stylish Quick Tips

Now that you’ve got the buzz on all the best things happening at this year’s FWSD we can only assume you’re just as excited as we are. Andrews gave a few helpful tips for attending this year’s events to share with you.

1. Don’t Drive

“Parking is already difficult in La Jolla and with everything going on you don’t want to be driving around looking for parking. Take an Uber or Lyft to avoid the hassle.”

2. Eat Before You Come

“Attending FWSD is much like attending a show, we go from 6-9:30 p.m. and even though there will be an intermission we will be serving only liquid refreshments. If you get to Hotel La Jolla early, there will be a happy hour in celebration of our events that we encourage everyone to take advantage of.”

3. Dress Up

“This is a fashion event and we love to see people go all out. Be comfortable of course, but you can never over dress for this event, only under dress.”
