5 Things to Look Forward to at Modernism Week Fall Preview—We Can’t Wait for #5!

Start Planning! Modernism Week Fall Preview Is Nearly Here, and We’ve Got All the Deets

Modernism is a design style that features simplicity, clean lines, modern materials, open floor plans and a connection with the surrounding landscape. This was the perfect style for the desert environment of Palm Springs while it was being developed in the 1930s-’60s when celebrities from the Los Angeles area enjoyed this desert getaway. Many structures designed by famous architects of the time are preserved, and current designers are maintaining the tradition. Modernism Week is a celebration of this style and features numerous events for visitors to enjoy. Here’s an inside look at five must-do events at Modernism Week’s annual Fall Preview taking place Oct. 14-17! Modernism Week Fall Preview

1 | Tour a Featured Design Project

One of the highlights of Modernism Week is touring properties that are normally not available to the general public. During Fall Preview, check out the Featured Design Project Tour: Limón, a colorful seven-bedroom property that was recently extensively renovated by H3K Home & Design. It was transformed into a holiday landing place that can accommodate 14 guests in separate suites, all surrounding a gleaming swimming pool. An all-steel structure, Limón is one of the most unique buildings in Palm Springs and features a large communal kitchen outfitted with state-of-the-art appliances and international décor. The property’s design was inspired by the optimistic era and continental graphics and style of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

2 | Make Yourself at Home

During Modernism Week Fall Preview, you won’t want to miss the walking tour of Twin Palms, which is recognized as the first full modernist neighborhood in the area and includes the Frank Sinatra home. Being offered for the first time this year, the tour features homes designed by several notable architects. Other tours include the stunning James Logan Abernathy home, a walking tour of the El Dorado Palms neighborhood in Indian Wells and the 2.5-hour, architectural double-decker bus tour of notable commercial and residential buildings in Palm Springs.

3 | Buy, Buy, Buy!

For those who are inspired to bring the modernism style into their own lives, be sure to attend the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale. Held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Oct. 15-17, this event will feature 50 premier national exhibitors offering vintage and limited-edition items. An Opening Night Party and Buying Preview will be held the evening of Oct. 15 for those who want cocktails and a first crack at the items for sale before the general public.

4 | Watch and Listen

Throughout this exciting, event-filled weekend, Modernism Week will host a series of screenings and informative talks you won’t want to miss!  On Oct. 15, The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation will present Master of the Midcentury: The Architecture of William F. Cody, which will be an informative talk chronicling the modernist architect’s significant contribution to Palm Springs’ built environment. And on Sunday, Oct. 17, Alan Hess will provide a lecture on Cody and another notable architect, Albert Frey, which will be followed by a screening of the Desert Modernists video series. Be sure to check out the full list of talks and screenings at www.modernismweek.com.

5 | Party Like It’s the ‘50s!

Modernism is the name and cocktail parties (at architecturally significant homes) are the game. No Fall Preview is complete without a Palm Springs soirée to end the day! With everything from a festive Opening Night Party (Oct. 15) to a Hawaiian-themed luau at the Tiki Hotel (Oct. 16), you’re sure to find many ways to celebrate a weekend well-spent.
