Oahu’s Kaimuki neighborhood rocks a different vibe than Waikiki, and its main thoroughfare, Waialae Avenue, is lined with cool local restaurants well worth venturing across town to explore. For a meal curated by a renowned chef duo (Chef Chris Kajioka and Mourad Lahlou), head over to French-Japanese bistro Miro Kaimuki, but if you’re craving Hawaiian fusion dishes, head to Mud Hen Water or The Surfing Pig. Homemade ice cream and malasadas at Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery are the bomb, but Via Gelato on nearby 12th Avenue is worth a visit too. And don’t forget Koko Head Café for brunch.

Chef Peter Merriman is a pioneer of Hawaii regional cuisine, so it should come as no surprise that his farm-to-table restaurant, Merriman’s, highlights seasonal dishes made with the best ingredients from land and sea. Backdropped by ocean views, sit down for a specialty cocktail (we suggest the Merriman’s Mai Tai) and apps like ahi poke—line-caught in Hawaiian waters—and the Chow Fun Noodles with pork and shrimp, before rounding out the meal with some decadent (but oh so good!) pineapple macadamia nut bread pudding.
