Experience the Ultimate Brunch and Ocean-View Bliss at Cody’s La Jolla

A Breakfast of Bennies and a Waterfront View Never Disappoints

Would you rather treat yourself to the best brunch spread you could imagine or peacefully overlook the ocean for a few hours uninterrupted? That’s a trick question. There’s no reason to choose when you can experience both at the same time. Cody’s La Jolla has served up ocean views and extraordinary plates in San Diego since 1997. Whether your style is brunch all day long or a long lunch that stretches into the afternoon, there’s something for every foodie’s schedule at this La Jolla restaurant.

Originally located on Girard Ave right across from the famous La Jolla Cove, Cody’s was taken over by Adam Stearns and his wife Amanda in 2012 and still operates as a family-owned business today. A prime seaside location and always delicious food quickly made it a San Diego staple. And all it takes is one step inside their bigger-and-better Prospect Street location to see why.

A short walk away from the original location, this outpost is adorned with California coastal decor and also boasts ocean views, making it a no-hesitation “table for two, please.” Every passing plate will only cement that first impression, and you’ll soon be screaming from their stunning rooftop why everyone should visit ASAP.

The current location sits higher on the hill above La Jolla Cove, donning an ocean view from the patio and dining room that’s even more spectacular than the original. With plenty of shade graciously given by frilled umbrellas, this Cody’s gives a charming seaside resort vibe straight from any Southern California dream. An added bonus: the people watching. If your table is close to the ledge, you’re tucked away enough to not be seen and free to dream up the lives of beach-goers a few stories below.

The indoor area is just as memorable: it features an open-air concept with tables surrounding a large central bar. You won’t miss an ounce of the mixology action while basking in an ocean breeze. And with windows that span the wall, indoor guests have the same sea view as patio diners, which means every seat is a great one. Give yourself the best of both worlds and perch in one of the high-seated wicker chairs near the gorgeous brass and teak bar.

Naturally, the iconic La Jolla location lends inspiration to many of the dishes here, specifically when it comes to seafood. If you were planning on ordering a classic eggs Benedict, they’ll do you a few better. Branch out into the full realm of Benedicts, and try the jumbo lump crab cake Benedict or Nueske’s smoked pork loin Benedict, or go for the mother of all bennies—the surf and turf. Yup, it’s exactly what you think: all the classic fixings of an English muffin, poached egg and bearnaise sauce, but one half is topped with juicy steak and the other half with fresh Maine lobster. Pair this with a guava mimosa, and you’ve officially peaked—until the next plate, of course.

We’d be remiss to forget the ultimate sweet treat to share—the Awesome French Toast. That’s the official menu name, and it’s also exactly how we’d describe it. Fluffy and full of flavor, the challah bread is griddled to perfection and topped with candied walnuts, fresh strawberries, mascarpone honey butter and all the syrup you desire. There’s only one correct answer for your drink pairing here: the classically delicious espresso martini. Have a little buzz with that honey butter!

If you’re more of a lunch person, not to worry: there are lunch options aplenty, served all day long. Try the stacked Cody’s burger made with Snake River Farms wagyu beef, aged white cheddar, onion jam, arugula and a farm-fresh egg or bacon on a brioche bun. Pair this juicy number with their balanced bloody mary, and you’re technically still brunching.

The large central bar isn’t just there for show—give those bartenders a reason to flex their skills, and order a few drinks for the table! Go for one of the classics, like a Mai Tai, or try a little something different, like the banana caipirinha. If you’d rather skip the booze, opt for their fresh-squeezed grapefruit or pineapple juice for a healthy morning pick-me-up.

Treat yourself to brunch with a side of ocean breeze at Cody’s La Jolla, open 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. all week long, as well as additional happy hours from 4-7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays!

Food

Large portions, fresh ingredients and creative seafood specialties make every dish a ten. The expansive menu and ability to pick between breakfast and lunch all day is also a win—everybody’s happy!

Decor

It’s giving “California coastal,” and we’re here for it. From the herringbone floors to the Gray Malin artwork and lush palms, there is clear attention to detail. Of course, nature’s decor always does it best—the ocean view is the ultimate eye-catcher.

Price Point

When considering the portion sizes and ambiance that goes along with every bite, the price point is right on par—especially when compared to neighboring restaurants in the typically pricey area of La Jolla.

Cody’s La Jolla has it all: an ocean view, a menu of delicious brunch and lunch choices, a charming ambiance and a super-friendly staff. It easily tops the list of seaside restaurants in San Diego.
