Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican culture, existing because of Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla back on May 5, 1862. People of different cultures celebrate Cinco de Mayo. While Cinco de Mayo may look a bit different this year in quarantine, that’s no reason not to celebrate at home with your quarantine crew. We’re sharing how to throw a festive and fun Cinco de Mayo fiesta at home this year. Cheers!
1 | It’s Corona Time
Maybe you’re craving an ice-cold Corona on a day like today. What is it that’s so refreshing about this cocktail?! Here’s how to make it: 16 oz pint glass rim with Tajin and Tapatio, 1/2 of a lime (squeeze the juice), 1/4 of an orange (squeeze the juice), add 1 tbs Chamoy, 3-4 dashes of Tapatio, 2-3 dashes of Worcestershire, 1-2 dashes of soy sauce, 1 dash of pepper, add 12 oz Corona, 4 ounces of Clamato, garnish with either cucumber slice, orange wedge or mango slice. Sprinkle with Tajin and enjoy!

3 | Good Grub Cinco de Mayo at home
Nothing says Cinco de Mayo like delicious food. Avila’s El Ranchito is offering trays of their homemade Chile Rellenos. “We’ve made them the same way for over 53 years. Only certain cooks can make them because there’s such an art behind them. We don’t cut corners,” Maribel Avila, owner of Avila’s El Ranchito, explains. What goes into making this delectable dish? “Each chili is fire-roasted, then you take off the skin. You then dip them into an egg white batter and they are stuffed with cheese. Then they’re fried. After that, they’re topped with our homemade salsa and more cheese. Nothing is out of a can; everything is fresh.”
Call your local Avila’s El Ranchito 24 hours in advance to place your order. Margaritas will be available at every location, along with fajita platters and taco kits by the tray. “We have some fun things for your take-home fiesta!” Avila says.
4 | One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila…. Cinco de Mayo at home
This year, you might want to put that double shot in your drink. You’re not going anywhere, let’s celebrate! 6 | Guac Contest
That’s right. It’s time for a guac-off. Have everyone in your family make their very best version of guacamole. While some prefer lime and some prefer tomatoes in their guacamole, it’ll be a family-friendly activity to spark some competition. Once everyone makes their guac, do a blind taste test and vote on the winner. The best part? You’ll have guac to eat all day long.
