This Modern Taqueria Has Landed in Los Angeles and Is Eager to Make a Difference
Los Angeles food lovers, mark your calendars—Descanso Restaurant is not only bringing its unique dining experience to the city but also giving back in a big way. To celebrate the grand opening of its flagship location, Descanso will donate a portion of sales from its opening weekend, January 23-25, 2025, to the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund. This heartfelt initiative aims to support those affected by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, making the event much more than just the debut of a new restaurant.
Located on Wilshire Boulevard in the historic SAG-AFTRA plaza, Descanso’s Los Angeles location is set to make waves in the culinary scene. This 9,000-square-foot space was once home to Callendar’s Grill for over 40 years. It has now been reimagined to house a vibrant, modern taqueria that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m., led by owner Rob Arellano.
At the heart of Descanso’s charm is its groundbreaking Plancha Dining experience, a first-of-its-kind concept in Los Angeles. Guests will enjoy an interactive and immersive culinary journey. Planchero Chefs will prepare multi-course meals on a sizzling Plancha grill right in front of them. Inspired by the lively energy of Mexican street vendors, this dining experience brings the sights, sounds, and flavors of Central Mexico into a full-service restaurant setting.
Descanso Restaurant’s menu, helmed by Executive Chef Jose Angulo, highlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients while staying true to authentic Mexican recipes. Plus, with no lard or canned goods, and everything made to order, the food showcases a dedication to quality. Therefore, this has earned Descanso a loyal following since its original debut in Costa Mesa in 2018. Additionally, the showstopping bar further enhances the experience, offering handcrafted cocktails to complement the bold, vibrant flavors.
