La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Renovation: Phase Two Begins

Phase Two of the Iconic Resort’s Renovation Brings 90 Reimagined Guest Rooms

If you’ve ever stood barefoot on one of SoCal’s only private beaches, cocktail in hand, watching the sun melt into the Pacific, you already know what La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is selling. Spoiler: it’s not just a room. It’s a whole mood. And that mood got a serious upgrade.

The beloved 21-acre coastal resort has officially launched phase two of its $60 million renovation. This time, the focus is where it matters most: the 90 guest rooms. With a completion target of Memorial Day 2027, the redesign signals a new chapter for a property that has been drawing California dreamers back, generation after generation, for 90 years.

This isn’t the resort’s first rodeo with renovation. Phase one wrapped in spring 2025 with a refreshed pool and deck, a reimagined Club Dining restaurant and a brand-new Club Market. The response? Enthusiastic, to say the least.

“The earlier enhancements at the Beach Club have been very well received, and we are eager to bring that same energy to the guest rooms,” said Managing Director Michael O’Donohue. “We’ve always drawn members and guests back year after year, generation after generation, and these renovated rooms will give them even more reason to stay. Every detail has been considered to ensure the experience inside aligns with the remarkable setting just outside their door.”

The redesign taps award-winning architecture firm Carrier Johnson to expand bathrooms and kitchens, maximize views and flood the spaces with natural light. Oltra Design Studio handles interior design, with seasoned San Diego hospitality design veteran Nicole Federico at the helm. Together, they’ve built a look rooted in the landscape. Think Torrey Pines meets Spanish-style warmth with the easy rhythm of the California coast.

The aesthetic execution of that vision starts with a color palette that leans into sand, surf and sky. Bedrooms anchor around a deep navy upholstered bed with brass nailhead trim, light oak nightstands and a swivel lounge chair. It’s cozy with a touch of coastal chic. Bathrooms step up with walk-in showers, fluted wood vanities, quartz countertops and wide lighted mirrors. In the kitchen, navy-painted islands with antique brass hardware feel more like a design moment than an afterthought.

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club remains fully operational throughout the renovation, with work completed in stages to avoid disrupting guests. Guests retain access to the private beach, heated junior Olympic-size pool with seven private cabanas, 13 championship tennis courts, five pickleball courts and a nine-hole par-three golf course. Plus, dining at Club Dining, the Walnut Lounge and the Marine Room. The property also offers more than 18,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space.
