Where Barefoot Luxury Meets the Sea of Cortez

Mar del Cabo by Velas Resorts is Baja’s Most Stylish Secret

Tucked along the tourist corridor midway between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Mar del Cabo by Velas Resorts is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever stayed anywhere else. That central location is one of the property’s quiet advantages, making it easy to explore both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo rather than feeling anchored to one side of Los Cabos.

This adults-only boutique hotel for guests ages 16 and up fuses Greek-inspired architecture with the warm soul of Mexico, resulting in soaring whitewashed arches draped in bougainvillea, cobalt-tiled corridors and the endless shimmer of the Sea of Cortez framing it all. The property is also pet-friendly, meaning four-legged companions are welcome too.

Unlike the sprawling mega-resorts that tend to dominate the Los Cabos landscape, Mar del Cabo operates on a more intimate frequency. As the only Velas Resorts property offered under a European Plan rather than all-inclusive, it serves as a blank canvas for guests to design their own escape.

There are just 48 suites in total, each one individually appointed with king or two queen beds, a kitchenette with a coffee maker and microwave, a terrace with a sitting area and a wide step-in rain shower. Some suites open directly to the ocean, where the sound of waves replaces the need for an alarm clock. The staff rounds out the experience. Friendly, attentive and genuinely helpful, the team reflects the smaller scale of the property in the best way. At a hotel this size, service feels personal rather than procedural.

A Table at the Edge of the Ocean

The culinary heart of Mar del Cabo beats inside Encanto Farm & Sea, the hotel’s oceanfront restaurant that sits less than 50 yards from the water’s edge. Nominated in the 2026 Culinary Awards for both “Farm-to-Table” and “Resort Dining,” Encanto is one of those rare dining experiences that earns its reputation quietly but completely. More than 90 percent of the ingredients are sourced from nearby fruit and vegetable orchards, ranches and coastal producers, with Chef Oscar Morales building a menu that evolves with the season’s harvest and the day’s catch.

Think corn soup with depth, sea bass cooked without flaw and shrimp tacos that taste exactly like a Baja afternoon should. For something more immersive, the Chef’s Blind Menu is worth reserving ahead.

Rather than choosing from a traditional menu, the experience is built around the fresh catch and regional ingredients of the day, with the chef crafting a personalized dining journey from start to finish.

Breakfast runs from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Lunch is served noon to 5:30 p.m. Dinner runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations can be made through OpenTable or by calling the resort directly at 624.104.9860.

For those who want to go deeper into Baja’s food culture, the resort also offers “Kitchen to the Farm,” a four-hour culinary excursion to Tiky Cabo, an organic farm located about 45 minutes north of Los Cabos in the mountain town of Miraflores. Guests tour the gardens, handpick seasonal vegetables and then sit down under an open sky for a meal made entirely from what was just harvested.

Beyond the restaurant, Mar del Cabo keeps guests engaged without requiring them to leave the property. On-site experiences include beachside picnics overlooking the water, mixology classes where guests learn to craft their own cocktails, workout classes and rotating activities throughout the week.

More Than a Hotel Stay

Boutique Hotel Los Cabos

One of the most compelling aspects of Mar del Cabo is what comes with it. Grand Velas Los Cabos, one of Mexico’s most acclaimed all-inclusive resorts, sits just steps away. Mar del Cabo guests receive discounted rates on dining, day passes and spa treatments at the award-winning SE Spa, including access to Cocina de Autor, the resort’s Michelin-starred restaurant led by two-Michelin-starred Chef Sidney Schutte. It is the kind of pairing that works seamlessly: the intimacy of a boutique stay with one of Los Cabos’ standout fine dining experiences just next door.

Back at the property itself, a sleek oceanfront pool anchors the social life of the resort. Two bars, a fitness center and private outdoor event spaces round out the offerings. For couples considering a beach wedding, Mar del Cabo ranks among the most stunning settings in San Jose del Cabo, with ceremony spaces and planning services available through the hotel’s dedicated weddings and events team. For those who want complete privacy, the property can be bought out entirely, making it one of the few boutique hotels in Los Cabos that offers a fully exclusive celebration from start to finish.

The New Boutique Standard

TripAdvisor currently ranks Mar del Cabo within the top five hotels in San Jose del Cabo, a distinction earned not through scale but through the kind of attentive, unhurried service that larger resorts often can’t replicate. Reviewers consistently point to the warmth of the staff, the quality of the suites and the feeling that the property never feels overcrowded.

The hotel debuted in December 2018 as the sixth property in the Velas Resorts portfolio and remains its only European Plan offering, built by Eduardo Vela Ruiz, founding president of Velas Resorts, with Juan Vela Ruiz serving as chief executive officer of the company.

The deep blue of the Sea of Cortez and the golden stretch of beach below your terrace are not scenery here. They are the entire reason to come.

Local Insight: Ask the concierge to set up sunset cocktails at the oceanfront fire pit lounge. It does not appear on any standard amenity list, but it is hands down the best seat in the house.
