Patagonia Cardiff Celebrates 20 Years of Surf & Stewardship

The Coastal Outpost Marks Two Decades of Environmental Activism

Patagonia’s Cardiff-By-The-Sea location turns 20 this May. The milestone marks two decades of the outdoor apparel company doing more than selling gear.

Since opening May 29, 2006, the store has contributed $715,333 to local environmental organizations. That money supports ocean stewardship, marine ecosystems, wildlife conservation and inclusivity initiatives across the region.

The Cardiff location earned recognition in 2025 as Social Impact For-profit Business of the Year from Cause Conference San Diego.

It’s proof that retail can function as community infrastructure.

“We always hope for our stores to benefit the communities in which they’re located, and we’ve worked hard to be a place our friends and neighbors want to keep around,” said David Hopkins, general manager of Patagonia Cardiff.

“It’s been a privilege being in Cardiff for the past 20 years.”

The store sits directly across from San Elijo State Beach. Cardiff Reef, Swami’s, Pipes and Turtles are all within walking distance. Location matters when you’re building a surf-focused retail space.

Patagonia was founded in Ventura in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard. The company operates as a certified B Corporation and founding member of 1% for the Planet. It has contributed more than $240 million to environmental organizations globally.

“Patagonia was founded in Ventura because our founder, Yvon Chouinard, wanted to be close to good surf,” Hopkins said.

“Cardiff has a long history with surfing too, of course, and we’re grateful the community has embraced us these past two decades.”

The Cardiff store carries wetsuits made from natural rubber developed by Patagonia. It stocks surfboards from Fletcher Chouinard Designs and local shapers, plus swim fins, leashes and UPF-rated apparel for adults and children.

The Worn Wear program offers wetsuit repair and product support. It extends the life of gear and reinforces the brand’s sustainability commitment.

The building itself carries history. Housed in the historic Hotel Cardiff, built in 1911, the space previously served as a post office and library. Patagonia preserved the structure’s character when designing the store.

Beyond retail, the location hosts film screenings, Paipo-building workshops, book signings and community gatherings. It organizes beach cleanups, surfboard swap meets and recycling events.

Every Patagonia store worldwide supports local environmental organizations working on climate and environmental solutions. The Cardiff location has maintained that mission through consistent community engagement and financial support for groups tackling regional environmental challenges.

The company’s unique ownership structure designates Earth as its only shareholder. Profits not reinvested in the business go toward protecting the planet.

For Cardiff-By-The-Sea, Patagonia functions as more than a Southern California surf store. It operates as a community hub where surf culture, environmental activism and local connection converge. Twenty years in, that relationship continues to strengthen.
