The Best Adult Happy Meal in San Diego Lives at Herb & Wood

Little Italy’s Celebrity Chef Hot Spot Serves the Ultimate $20 Deal

Forget everything you thought you knew about San Diego happy hour deals. Herb & Wood just raised the bar with what might be the best adult happy meal in the city.

Chef Brian Malarkey’s celebrated Little Italy restaurant serves up a half-pound burger, three roasted oysters, crispy fries and bubbles for just $20. It’s the kind of deal that makes you wonder if someone made a pricing error. They didn’t.

“If you’ve been searching for the best adult happy meal, this is it,” says Herb & Wood. “It includes a half-pound burger, three roasted oysters, crispy fries, and bubbles, all for only twenty dollars.”

The catch? You need to know the rules.

Herb and Wood happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. only. No reservations. No exceptions. The menu lives exclusively at the bar and counter seats, and it’s first-come, first-served. Book a 5 p.m. table in the dining room, and you’ll get the regular dinner menu instead. Smart locals know to arrive early and claim a bar seat. Note that a 4% surcharge is added to all guest checks.

Beyond the Happy Meal, the Herb and Wood bar menu delivers serious value. The $8 smash burger comes with American cheese, 1000 Island and grilled onions. Three roasted oysters with horseradish butter run $6. Frites are $4.

The bubbles half-off deal sweetens the pot. All bottles of sparkling wine drop to half price during happy hour. G.H. Mumm champagne from Reims pours for $13 by the glass. Ora Collective extra brut prosecco and Pierre Sparr brut rosé from Alsace both clock in at $7.50. Gocciolare Barbera from Langhe, Italy costs $9.

Beer drinkers can grab Harland’s Japanese-style lager for $6. The non-alcoholic lemon and herbs drink with fresh lemon juice, roasted lemon and thyme syrup, grenadine and soda goes for $7.

Malarkey built Herb & Wood around rustic, wood-fired Mediterranean cuisine with a California ethos, and the happy hour menu reflects that same sensibility: approachable, well-crafted and genuinely worth the trip. It’s one of Little Italy’s most beloved restaurants, and the happy hour is one of the best reasons to show up before 6 p.m.

Herb & Wood sits at 2210 Kettner Blvd in the heart of Little Italy. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. daily, with the kitchen running until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Call (619) 955-8495 for more information.

The no-reservation model means timing matters. Show up at 5:01 p.m. on a Friday and you might find every bar seat taken. The window is tight, and the deal is too good to ignore.

Herb & Wood keeps it simple: $20, one hour and a bar seat with your name on it. Half-pound burger, roasted oysters, frites and bubbles. The only question is why you haven’t gone yet.
