Anigma Is Encinitas’ New Secret Speakeasy Worth Finding

A Hidden Cocktail Lounge With Astrology Vibes and Real Bullet Holes

Encinitas finally has the secret cocktail lounge it’s been waiting for. Anigma is a 47-seat speakeasy tucked inside Archive at 517 S. Coast Highway 101, and getting in is part of the experience. The mind behind it is Paula Vrakas, one of four partners behind the project and co-owner of The Roxy Encinitas next door. Vrakas brings decades of hospitality experience to the project, from working as a busser and hostess as a teenager in Wisconsin to bartending nights while working as a veterinary technician after her service in the Air Force. Anigma is her most ambitious swing yet, and it’s a hit.

Here’s how it works. Head into Archive, the shop on Coast Highway in downtown Encinitas. Somewhere inside, you’ll find the hidden entrance: an astrolabe-inspired door that opens into Arcana itself. The discovery feels intentional, a small ritual before the main event. The vibe is esoteric and mythology-driven, occult and mysterious. The name itself tells the story. Anigma means hidden knowledge revealed only to those who seek it, a definition that shaped every detail of the concept, from the design to the cocktail menu.

One note before you go: Anigma is currently reservation-only. Book through OpenTable before making the trip. “Five years ago, we had this idea of doing something that was more astrology-driven, kind of occult and weird,” the owner explains.

“We found the definition of the word Anigma, which is mystery and intrigue, not known to everyone but known by some. And that is what designed the place.”

The space feels like you’ve stepped into another era. The ceiling tiles were salvaged from a saloon in Cheyenne, Wyoming built in 1860. Look closely, and you’ll spot actual bullet holes scattered across it. It’s the kind of detail that makes Anigma feel less like a new bar and more like a place with a past. “There are actual bullet holes all over it,” the owner says.

“I wanted to create a space that would make people have a good time. I think Encinitas has needed something like this for a very, very long time.”

The cocktails are expertly crafted, and the atmosphere leans into the mysterious. It’s the kind of place you want to keep to yourself, but won’t be able to stop talking about.

Anigma opens Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight. Reservations are required, so book through OpenTable before you go. This isn’t your typical Encinitas bar. It’s darker, stranger and more theatrical. The occult-themed nightlife scene in California just got a lot more interesting, and it’s happening right here in North County.

If you’re searching for unique bars in Encinitas or the best secret bars in San Diego County, Anigma delivers. It’s a speakeasy near me that actually feels like a discovery. The craft cocktails are worth the hunt, and the experience rewards the curious.

Finding Anigma takes a little effort, but that’s the point. The mysterious bars in California that make you work for it are always the ones you remember. This one’s no exception.

Erik Hale is the visionary and publisher behind LOCALE Magazine. He launched the magazine in 2010, wanting to give the community of OC a premiere lifestyle magazine that knew all the native knowledge behind OC. “Six years ago Ashley and I sat at a table scratching the name LOCALE (among some other names) onto a sheet of paper,” says Erik, “coming up with story ideas and basically dreaming. Everything we imagined has happened and we have been blessed with so much more. I am so grateful as we start another year for my family, my two wonderful children, my health, our amazing writers, designers and photographers, our advertising partners and you.”
