This Pacific Beach Fish Market Serves What They Catch

Nico’s Fish Market brings ocean-to-table dining to San Diego

You’ve never eaten fish this fresh unless you caught it yourself.

That’s the promise at Nico’s Fish Market, a Pacific Beach spot where the line between fish market and restaurant blurs in the best possible way. Located at 745 Emerald Street, half a block from the water, this place serves what they catch. No shortcuts, no mystery sourcing, no long transport times.

The team sources whole fish daily from their own boat and a trusted network of local fishermen instead of a wholesale supplier or auction house. Local Bluefin tuna, Yellowtail, Swordfish, and Halibut all move from the water to the case the same way: caught, cleaned, and prepped in-house, with nothing passing through a middleman first. Everything is made fresh to order, with recipes built from scratch around whatever the ocean provides that day.

We tried the Ahi Poke Burrito and Nico’s Plate, and it doesn’t get much fresher than this. The fish swimming in the ocean hours before it hits your plate turns a simple lunch or dinner into something worth planning around.

The space keeps things relaxed and casual: a fish market case displaying the daily catch sits alongside a restaurant where you can order made-to-order seafood. It’s the perfect balance for Pacific Beach, where beach vibes meet serious seafood quality.

Nico’s Fish Market is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The menu depends entirely on what comes in that day, so the plates rotate with the catch rather than a fixed rotation. The Poke Burrito has become a standout for its fresh, convenient format, while Nico’s Plate showcases whichever fish came in that morning, prepared simply enough to let it shine.

The story behind it all is rooted in fishing, surfing, family, and a deep love for the ocean. The team can tell you where each fish came from, who caught it, and how, and that transparency is the whole point.

Next time you’re in Pacific Beach, stop by Nico’s Fish Market. You’re welcome.
