-“You will almost always catch me in a hat since I view hats as an extension of my personality. Janessa Leoné hats are the perfect accessory to edge up an outfit with the bonus of protection from the sun.”

-“These effortlessly cool LOVE Binetti sundresses are colorful, flowy and playful, making it easy to switch from poolside to festival grounds.”

-“The key to getting from stage to stage is a comfortable shoe. I love these Golden Goose Sneakers because they are an elevated take on the classics that work with dresses, skirts or cutoff shorts.”

-“A jumpsuit, like the OVERLOVER jumpsuit, is like a blank canvas that allows you to style it in any direction: bold or simple. Keep it fresh by adding statement earrings from Robin Mollicone or a bandana from Ozma.”

-“In a festival setting, it’s important to be able to transition from a hot day to a cool night. A La Prestic Ouiston duster gives you the versatility you need and is the best way to add that eye-catching finish.”

6 | Lanvin and Luxury

Mitchells Palm Springs

Christian Dior, Louis Vitton, Loris Azzaro, Pucci and Lanvin are just a few of the top designer names you’ll find at Mitchells Palm Springs. “We sell clothing from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and the ‘90s, along with some contemporary resale pieces,” explains owner Mitchel Karp. He also carries designer eyewear, including sunglasses by Ted Lapidus. His store has a very 1970s, “Studio 54” feel. “I carry a lot of jeweled garments and deep, plunging necklines. My store is about being sexy.”

Karp went to college in Boston and became the fashion coordinator for Bloomingdale’s in the early ‘80s. “This gave me a lesson in finery,” he says. When he lived in both Palm Springs and Los Angeles, he decided to open a store he could call his own. “Who knew that it would take off the way it has?” he enthuses. Karp is also very philanthropic, as he puts on a big fashion show every year during Modernism Week in Palm Springs. Ticket sales benefit Temple Isaiah.

Mitchells is located in Palm Springs, but the store attracts customers from all over the country who are all different shapes and sizes. Many of his customers share photos of themselves on Instagram while wearing clothing from the store. He beams, “Knowing that people fall in love with their clothes makes me happy.” He adds that people can wear vintage pieces with newer garments, and his prices range from $95 to $5,000. “I have a little something for everybody!”

8 | Prints and Patterns

Candice Held

Candice Held began by designing one-of-a-kind dresses made from recycled vintage scarves in 2001, and soon, celebrities like Beyoncé, Halle Berry and Britney Spears were among her clientele. It was difficult to keep up with the demand when her distribution grew to over 50 boutique accounts here and in Europe. She says, “Working with so many scarf prints and colors while designing my vintage line inspired me to begin designing my own silk scarf and textile prints.”

Held and her husband relocated to Palm Springs from Los Angeles in 2013. She says that her designs “are inspired by the California desert and beyond.” Her limited-edition garments and accessories are handmade in California, using imported fabrics and silk scarves printed with her original textile designs.

How does she create her products? “I’m always gathering inspiration—from nature to architecture to runway shows to movies and on and on,” Held explains. “When I design a new collection, first I put together a theme and a color palette. Next, I create original studio artwork elements by drawing and painting with gouache and watercolor.”

Using those elements, she creates scarf and allover fabric layouts in Photoshop. She then sketches the silhouettes and assigns fabrics to be printed with each design. After that, she drapes, sews and creates patterns.

“[My designs] come 100% from me,” she explains, adding that her vision is clear, beginning with the product and advancing to the boutique decor and the editorial campaigns for each collection.

For women who want to support efforts to preserve the environment as well as the empowerment of women entrepreneurs internationally—and look magnificent while doing it—Island Tribe’s stunning clothing designs are for you.

Based in the Palm Springs area, co-founders Angeline Hayling and OD Odero design exquisite creations produced primarily in Bali, India and Tulum, Mexico, as well as Los Angeles.

The company uses natural, environmentally sustainable materials, such as bamboo, silk, organic cotton and vegan leather. Future materials may include hemp and agave. Hayling describes the overall theme as “feminine, effortless—that whole California ease with a Bohemian touch to it. We want to be known as being conscious of the environment, holistic living and spirituality.” Odero describes the neutral white and soft, natural colors as “desert-esque and beachy,” reflecting the purity and spirituality of nature.

They carry ready-to-wear selections for the everyday lifestyle. “Our signature piece is the kaftan,” says Hayling. “It’s very free-flowing and easy to wear, so many of our customers bring it when they travel.
