March 24, 2020: In order to best prepare the area, Riverside County health officials and Indio City leaders have decided to prepare the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio for the placement of a Federal Medical Station (FMS). According to County Public Health officials, these beds and other materials will help alleviate the burden of an expected medical surge brought on by COVID-19.

As early as Wednesday morning, the California National Guard will take post at the County Fairgrounds in order to assist in receiving and setting up. The National Guard’s presence will not be for policing—it will be for humanitarian efforts.

“We appreciate the support of the California National Guard to help secure and support this federal medical station,” Indio Mayor Glenn Miller stated. “Their assistance will enable our local first responders and public safety officers to spend their time and energy within the community, where their efforts are most needed.” COVID-19 Riverside County

Within Riverside County, the Coachella Valley has reported the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases. The facility’s size, availability of appropriate amenities for medical professionals and proximity to a hospital and mental health facilities make the County Fairgrounds in Indio a natural location for an FMS.

“People will be cared for at this medical station at a secure location in which the COVID-19 virus can also be isolated and contained,” stated Mayor Miller. “Putting these resources at the County Fairgrounds is the right and appropriate thing to do, and in the City of Indio, we are here to help in whatever way we can.”

According to County Public Health officials, the FMS will be available to treat general non-ICU patients. More details of the FMS will be released for the public’s knowledge, safety and assurance. COVID-19 Riverside County
